I'm an accountant that lkes computers and M:TG (my articles). I play in 6-8 tournaments a month, including PTQ's.

I look like the avatar I chose for this board.

I think I'm a decent sized nerd <grin>.

you want more of an ego boost?
during my prime I was able to quote the rules book for most of the rules. Even the esoteric which one was first rules. That was fun when you got people complaining.

And nothing stopped my Ice Age Alliance Land GoBoom Deck. I was able to survive and win with only 6 mana on the table.

I practically introduced MTG to my town. I quickly bowed out when I realized I couldn't buy the gobs of cards necessary to compete. I have since moved onto collectible games that don't seem to rely so much on budget - Z-G, MK😀ungeons, Flagship, Diceland...

Someone gimme an offer on the 1000 or so cards I got. starting bid is $200. 😀

I hope you didn't get the Encyclopedia, as its no longer being supported. As far as MTG: Online, its cheaper and easier to use apprentice.

But you don't get the exclusivity of the cards!! 😛😛😛
Heh, I remember playing a prototypically broken Necrodiscard deck and an AllGlobal white deck. Man, that Global deck annoyed people to no end... most people conceded after a while rather than have me kill them with a single Vise.

I should sell my cards... I have some good old Type 1 staples like ManaDrain leftover from a fun blue/white control deck.

I found the following:

Magic and Windows XP
At the present time, most people are having success loading the Duels version of the game, but only with Compatibility mode turned off. Give this a try if you are using XP, or if you have more then 1 partition on your drive, and enough space, make a dual boot system, and play Magic using another version of Windows. I was able to load the original version of the game with the large Manalink patch and the special patch for the newer operating systems no problem on my XP system. Let me know if you need further assistance with this.
Note that you will need to install the Manalink 1.32 patch to make the game work with XP I have now posted directions on installing both the Duels of the Planeswalkers version of the game, and the original Magic for the PC version on our Manatalk board, in the General area. Note that you will not need the Spells of the Ancients expansion, and should never use the patch for that version on your game.

Free online M:TG: Apprentice

Don't know if it has all the latest sets or not (haven't bought cards in years), but it's a good program. There's no server you connect to with tons of players or anything, just directly connect to a friend.

Edit: My collection 🙂

I haven't played magic in years. I still remember building a black and white pesto deck...lots of good memories...

like putting light of day on the field against mono-black decks.
winning on turn 4.
running through prospo bloom was a blast every time I did it.
the squirrel deck was fun as hell too.
the look on a green weenie player's face when you start pulling out fruity pebbles.
Agitating the hell out of another player with my "Timmy!" deck.

Favorite card was a UN serra angel I still have in plastic "survive nuclear blast" case. It was a gift..card's only worth like 10 bux tho.
Favorite creature: Tim (aka prodigal sorceror). I love tim. Saved my arse crackloads of times. anything with 1 defense BOWS to tim. multiple tims are so much fun.

Actually, if you have mIRC theres a channel full of people you can play. Theres probably 100 people in there, if say you're looking for a game, you'll get messaged. It's on Newnet and channel #apprentice.

Why does everyone call prodigal sorceror Tim?

In reference to the wizard in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

"They call me..... Tim"

Serra was probably the best all-around card available. 🙂

There are a few other programs.

MTGPlay updates the MIE and lets you play multi-player. It is free.

Magic Workstation is a more modern version of Apprentice (Apprentice allows cheating).

please dont get the PlayStation version of this game, if anyone has played it you will know what I mean. ITs actually fun for a few minutes kinda like Risk. at least I got it for free.

I had a wicked burn deck which got increasingly more powerful which each edition that came out cus they reprinted the cards with different names so technically they were the different cards but the same abilities. Killing you 3 damage at a time. And of course I had the big creature green deck and the black n blue counter power deck. I never got into tournies so I had a lot of mix n match decks. My friend actually had a decent idea he had a black n white deck with c.o.p.s and Lord of the Pit, and that white card where you get life for damage dealt. He almost always lost cus it was very dependent on getting a few cards out but it was a great idea

also one of the revisions had that monty python quote on the prodigal card. Might have been 4th but coulda been 5th
