I just downloaded this 290-some-MB file and it says you can have a free trial and play one deck. So I'm thinking okay, how much for a full version. Well apparently you can sign up for an account for $10... But I don't know if this is monthly or a one-time fee. I think it would be more than worth it for a one time fee because I love this game and have some cards, but no one to play with... so this is my chance. Does anyone know?

I believe it is a one time fee.

BUT.... you also have to buy digital cards. And they cost just as much as real cards ($2.99 or whatever for a booster, $8.99 for a starter)

They cost the same price? Are they retarded?

Ya, the usefulness of this game has been questioned many times....

I believe you can request your cards in physical form, however. So buy paying for digital versions of the cards, you are in a sense getting the same thing you get when you go to the store and buy the cards normally.

I haven't played in about 7 years, but for some reason this online version seems interesting... I just don't think I'd appreciate constantly playing with a bunch of jerks, which is usually what you find in any online game.

Just typing this post started me thinking back to my cards, which are sitting at home in a binder... should probably find another home for them. :)

Here's the link to Apprentice: http://www.dragonstudios.com/apprentice/

I don't know how up to date it's card database is, just make sure you download the Oracle Card Set Update for some newer sets. The game acts just as if two people were sat together with their cards. It only provides the cards and tokens and such; it's up to the players to know and enforce the rules. I like it quite a lot, and it is free.

I think I saw a boxed version of this at EB yesterday for $24.95 (in Canada).
I don't know if this gives you the full account or not but I would check it out.

THANK YOU! That is very sweet, and lemme get this straight, there's no room of games that you select one to play in. You have to get a friend's IP address who has the game and then just play with them? Or am I missing something?

No problem. :)

You're correct, there is no meeting place or anything. You just get a friend to download it then either you or him hosts and the other connects via ip address.

Hmm... my friend w/Win XP (I have 98) was unable to get this to work. I suggested he downloaded the 2000 version because the two OS's are nearly identical. He said he tried to open it and it froze his system so he just didn't bother anymore with this... Now I'm actually considering signing up for the WOTC MTGO.

There has to be support for XP tho...

That's rather odd.. I've got XP Pro and Apprentice runs perfectly fine for me. I don't recall whether I downloaded the Win9x or the 2000 version, but I'd assume the latter. The program doesn't say.
