Okay, so some of us are willing to admit that we are dorks. This post is for you. Magic the Gathering went online last week and for a limited time the full version download of the client is free ($15 if you buy it B&M), and when you register for $10, you get a $10 gift certificate for buying things. If you don't want to register you can still play 5 premade decks for free. If you have some extra money and you like playing this game, you can buy online cards (unfortunately for the same price as printed cards) and build your online decks.

I've heard a rumor that you can trade in decks you buy for real decks, but this could be total BS.

Anyway, here is the link to the magic the gathering online site: Text

And here is a direct link to the download page:Text

I decided to play, i figure 10 bucks is a great deal for an online game of any variety. There are always people playing, and there are tournements pretty much all day. Look me up when you registered, my name is djvaller (coincidence?) on that thing too.

My cousin plays this game. He reports that there has been a big drop off in players because it's so expensive to play now. Many people believe that paying money for fictional cards is rediculous.

I think it will be around for awhile for the hard core players. There are always people playing, so no need to worry about matching up with someone.

The game sounds good an all, except for the payment system. Also, did you read the EULA on that Kontiki prog? They want to install a Digital Rights Management prog, just like that intrusive June 26 WMP update.

Used to play this game back in high school. Had a good deck, but lost all my cards in a move :( I don't think playing the game online will be as fun as playing with the real cards. Half the fun was slamming down some card your opponent had never seen before, and having him pick it up and slowly read it, mouthing out the words silently, the last ones always ending with "f*** me." Haha. Good thread, djvaller. Won't download myself, but if anyone is curious about this game it is really fun and addictive.

Lol ... feel like downloading it myself <resisting the mouse movement..... Arghhhh... gives in...>

I agree that this game has gone over the line. When i first started playing Magic the Gathering... with the Revised series, the game was so much fun to play. Guess "wizards" grew tired of low margin profits and wanted to expand... damn... the value of the cards devalued and so many cards got banned that in the end, the game became a totally different one..

Just tried buying an "expert deck".... man. They suck. Even my worse deck last time could defeat this typical start-up decks. Guess that's the way it is...:(

Well I'm an old hard-core fan too. I played in high school until their ridiculous prices(and price hikes due to the "rising cost of paper"?) pissed me off enough to quit playing(plus I discovered girls).

So far I've been unimpressed with the game. I've played a few times and while it could be fun if I started putting money into it, I think I've decided to just drop the $20 I spent so far and say forget it. Magic is probably the best game I've ever played, whether on computer or not, but it is not so good as to warrant the amount of money necessary. I would have even been willing to pay for cards if they weren't so freaking much, but I'm not going to get hooked on that expensive habit again(I preordered the game before I knew you had to buy cards).

The interface in the game is alright, but it seems a little slow(AMD XP 1700+, 512 MB Crucial 2100 DDR, DSL internet) which suprises me with my set up. Plus, everytime you connect you have to download all these files which I think are checksums or something to make sure you don't hack, so modem users might want to watch out cause I know I couldn't stand it. Even once you log in I still think it is slow and not set up very well. I like to believe I'm fairly computer literate, and I was getting lost in their menus and set up(of course I also didn't read the manual).

Overall I'm pretty dissapointed in the game. Unless you're a hardcore magic fan or have a lot of money to spend, I'd say buy Warcraft III on Wednesday instead.

I downloaded this a few days ago when it went live. The 5 premade decks really suck.I played Magic from Revised til Odessey(off and on) but I finally realized 2 things.
1)It costs too damn much
2)The more sets they make, the more ridiculous it gets.(and less fun)

Granted, you can play Magic with crap cards and still have fun,but chances are you will get sick of losing with those crap cards. So you buy more...then you're on the wheel. It's unfortunate, but this game is not for the poor(like me:))
Combine that with the pricing structure(a subscription fee would have been better) and the fact that you will never be able to play with any cards made before Nemesis(i think),makes MTGO not very appealing.

As far as trading your virtual cards in for real ones,I heard that you can do that but only once you have completed a set.In other words it would be too much work to fish out and mail 1 or 2 cards to everyone.Instead they just want to send sets.

Great game, but oh so bad on the wallet.

Just my 2cents

So I started playing. Instead of buying a theme deck with the certificate. I bought packs and traded them at the trading post for a deck. This resulted in a better deck plus extra cards to alter the deck.
I went red (slightly burn) because its the cheapest color to make decent IMO.

If you want to play mtg online, what you are looking for is here. I used to play all the time about 2 years ago, when there were a lot of good people in the league (including some Pro Tour-ers), but I heard the skill level has really gone downhill since then. Apprentice32, the software they use, is IN EVERY WAY SUPERIOR TO THAT CRAPPY MTG ONLINE CLIENT. Too bad 2.0 never came out though, Shroomy said he was almost done . . . ah well. Also, check out netdraft. It's what the pros use to pratice. It simulates roch or normal draft, even the common runs. Much cheaper then buying boxes too :)
