I'm thinking about purchasing Magic Jack for the purpose of creating an inexpensive second phone number for myself. Does it install adware and/or spyware on your computer? Does it end up burdening your CPU? Does it eat up your bandwidth when you aren't talking to anyone?

Those things you mention do not seem to be the main issue with MJ. It seems to be more of a quality issue.

MJ does have a very annoying app that pops up all the time. Somebody made a popup blocker for it. I don't think there's any spyware.

I tried MJ and it didnt work well for me on my system(s). I found it too annoying and I returned it. They did handle the return as promised so it's really not a problem to give it a try.

If you're technically inclined and adventurous, an alternative to MJ can be found on the SD forums (search for "Googlevoice + Asterisk").
