That is really nice to know.

Bwahahahaha!

Seriously though, I have a bunch of rare cards from the revised edition. Are they worth anything? I remember my Thallid deck from the Fallen expansion kicking ass for a little while. It was the only tournament I ever played :)

Ummmm both Serra Angels and Sengir Vampires are Type 2 (Standard) legal so I don't know where you folks are getting your info from as they are both in Seventh edition. I think some folks need to read the rules posted on the DCI website.

Nah. Most of the peeps here are going from memory (an inaccurate memory). Cut them some slack :D

Heh, I worked in a comics shop.

When I got married I sold all my Beta's (just a couple) Legends, and Arabians. Only got about $200 for them in '98

Could of made a lot more but didn't want to mess with it.

stopped playing after 4th edition came out and about every idiot i knew started playing it. some spend about 500 $ just to start!!!! that wasn't fun anymore. the more money you pump in, the better the cards/decks you get.
good for the business, bad for me:D

about 2-3 years ago i sold my entire collection on an amazon.com auction.. what i did, was lay out the best cards on my scanner in rows of 3 so you could just see the titles of them... had like 4 or 5 pages like that of my best stuff.. and said "this is just a small sample of my collection" etc.. a little shady, but i ended up getting over $800 for the collection. if i would have sold it individually i doubt i would have went higher than $300.

Magic is alive and going strong. Some of the stronger decks in the current Type 2 environment use mainly commons and uncommons, so it is possible to have a decent deck without spending much money on it. Or you can go all out and buy all the expensive rares.

In regards to the first question, dealers get boxes for just over $60 when they buy in bulk. Cost is close to $1.75 a pack. "Hot" rares will go for $10 - $15, many will fetch $5 and most will be between $1 and $2. Once the commons and uncommons are sold off, most dealers make a decent but not amazing profit. Most of the money comes from selling boxes and packs to players (most stores run draft tournaments where you need to buy 3 packs. Retail is around $3 a pack so they make $1.25 a pack).

So, yes, you can make money if you're big enough to buy in bulk to get the best price. It is very competitive.

If you have old cards and are wondering about what they go for, Cardshark.com is a good source of information.

ps - there is an online version of the game that is a pretty faithful reproduction of the the cardboard-based game, right down to buying and opening packs. Wizards.com has the information. If you're looking for a program to play online for free, then this site is a good palce to visit: Magic Workstation

Ok Mindtwist is not banned, its restricted in T1. Fork is not banned it is restricted in T1. Serra Angel is not banned it was reprinted in 7th edition because it is not very good. For the casting cost there are much more useful creatures i.e. Morphling. The way people make money off magic cards on ebay is not by buying boxes then selling the cards that is a losing proposition. They make money by purchasing the singles from people in bulk or for cheap and then selling them for a good profit on Ebay. It really isnt that hard to do if you know what your doing it just takes some knowledge.

*oh and anyone selling cards feel free to email me with what you have and what you want at squirrel@dragondog.org*
