Magazines sell your name?

We just recently started recieving junk mail (credit card. other crap) addressed to our dog. The only thing we have EVER signed up with his name on it was Glamour Magazine (long story) a few months ago...

Have they always done this?
 
Was it one of those free subscriptions that show up all the time in Hot Deals? If so, then yeah, they sell your name.
 
Yup, you often have an opportunity to opt out, but most people don't see the small print wherever the magazine puts it. Also, if you signed up for the magazine through a subscription service, the junk mail > *.
