Just got it on the steam deal for 33 and the game seems very nice. Very cinematic I hope that continues through the rest of the story, I like walking through the city and seeing some guy fixing a car and his wife harassing him. People walking out of doors etc. The city seems alive.

Patches on the PC for free-roam make the game. The story is amazing, and so is the city.

Haters gonna hate.

FYI, Direct2Drive has it for same price less 20% discount if anyone is looking to pick it up.

I just beat the game and was pleasantly surprised at how awesome it was. I got 16 hours out of it with only minimal reloading, and for a game so dependent on scripting, storyline, etc I was expecting about half of that. Some missions were a bit FedEx-y but the original Mafia wasn't 100% consistent either, so I don't mind. And I don't understand the complaints about free-roam; it's basically identical to the first Mafia, except that the world changes a bit more and that there's more to explore. If you hated the first Mafia then yeah, there's no reason to expect a change for the better, but this was about as loyal a sequel as I could have hoped for.

EDIT: Oh, Googling tells me that people are calling Freeride "free roam". That feature I do miss.

I was worried about consolification when I saw that they added a cover system and simplified the driving physics, but they really didn't seem intrusive here. The cover system was particularly well-done; it almost gives me hope for Deus Ex 3 again. Well, there's the regenerating health too I suppose, but considering how the original Mafia would string you along a giant level full of snipers with one medkit at the end, I prefer regenerating health. Some of those original missions were a pain in the ass the first time through.

yep. I hope it was much longer but Mafia was a big surprise for me on how much I enjoyed it. I think I beat it in couple of weeks with casual play.
Almost wish I played slower though. There were so much detail they didn't use at all throughout the city.

There is an expansion called joe's adventure but I hear it doesn't add anything to the main story. Too bad..

Top notch game imo.

It's only like that for the first few chapters.

The original Mafia had that same problem though. Like on the racecar sabotage mission, where on the drive you come across homeless people huddled around a burning barrel, or a guy threatening suicide on the Giuliano Bridge, and such. Or on the initial foot-escape from Morello's guys where you encounter a urinating dude, petty burglary, a wife and husband arguing, and whatever else. By the mid-point, nearly all scripted events were limited to enclosed missions. It just isn't practical to spend time putting nifty little scripted goodies throughout a giant map when most people won't ever see them.

PC games are supposed to challenge you, if you dislike a challenge, buy a console.

It's hardly a matter of challenge. It's a matter of investing thirty minutes into a level, being instantly killed by a sniper, and having to start from scratch because the games don't allow saving. Or because Paulie decides to walk straight into a wall of fire on the bottom floor of the parking garage. If you think of tedious stupidity as a challenge, go play a NES game.

Sounds like you don't like a challenge...

I like a challenge that tests more than my ability to predict zones of near-instant death (whether for me or my partners in crime).

I'm enjoying the game (I think I'm on Chapter 9 now) but there is a little too much driving around for my taste and not enough actual missions.

My biggest issue is the god damned saving; I just drove all the way across town to my mission, tailed a guy for another super long drive as I was supposed to, walked through a sewer, then accidentally blew my cover and it took me all the way back to when I first got the mission; I quit after that. What a bunch of bullshit.

I'll have to go back to it tomorrow or something once I am no longer pissed off.

Ugh I hate that shit...

Just started the game today- a few hours in to it and really enjoying it.

PC games are supposed to be fun. Period. What you find fun somebody else may not (and vice versa), which is why rational people can disagree about whether a game is fun or not.

time sinks designed to distract you from the fact that this is a short game...

I'm 8hrs into it and many of the complaints are right on about this game. It's fun but it's basically the same mission over and over again, hand-to-hand fighting is too easy, block, dodge, block, counter, repeat, gun fights are basically the same as well, cover, pop-out, shoot, cover repeat and you cannot complete any missions any other way, too much damn driving to places all the time, nothing much to do other than the mission you are supposed to do which is terrible for this type of game which means practically no freedom of what you want to do. Sure you can sell some cars but that's it, buy some fresh weapons, new clothes, beef up your car, there's practically nothing else to do other than the main missions which really disappoints me as freedom to do what missions you want at whatever time is what makes games like GTA fun. This has none of the freedom. I'm still enjoying it though but am definitely glad I didn't pay full price for this game as everyone says it's short as well but it feels worth the $12.50 that it was for on holiday sales.

Love shooting people in the head in moving vehicles, especially if they're speeding, one of the most hilarious gameplay animations I've ever seen.

I gave up on this game after 25 minutes. I hate games that force their lame clichéd story down your throat, and force you to do a bunch of lame ass "pick up, drop off" missions before you can do anything cool.

How is the story forced down your throat? The second level is a tutorial level, yes, but you fail at computer gaming if you let one turn you off.

I really wish there were some options as far as the story goes. You seem to really have no choice as to where things can go; I like linear games, but this is almost too linear. I'd at least like a few different dialogue options.

I'm enjoying it overall, but there seems to almost zero replay value.

Got the Digital Deluxe edition off the Steam sales a few days agao, it is amazing!

Love the story and characters, city is small but greatly design. The cars are awesome heheh!

I'm only on chapter 8 now but i'm rolling at 2-3 chapters per sessions of play so it's going pretty well for now. Can't wait to see more!
