I just completed a vanilla install of Fedora Core 3 on my Compaq Presario 2199US last night. So far I have had good luck installing drivers and configuring my system. Video and Sound were detected automatically with 3D accelleration enabled (very nice
).
Ethernet controller was automatically detected and properly configured.
Linuxant HSF drivers worked like a dream to get the 56K Conexant ACLink Winmodem going (yes that's right I said Winmodem) with full v.92 compliance after a $14.00 license fee. (The free drivers only run the modem at 14.4).
My next step is to tackle Wifi. My Netgear WP511T is an Aerthos based card so MADwifi drivers will be my approach here. The last time I tried this was with RedHat 9 (with no real success). I got as far as installing the packages and recompiling the kernel, but hotplug failed to initialize the card even though the kernel showed interface ath0 as 'OK' at boot time.
I'm hoping for a little more success with FC3 and the new 2.6.x kernel. So far FC3 has been pretty slick with other things, but knowing what I'm in for with MADwifi I figured I'd see who around here has pulled off installing and running MADwifi successfully.
So, IF any of you here have successfullly installed and configured MADWifi, could you please share with me your experience? What steps you took to get there, problems you encountered and how you overcame them. Especially if you did this using RedHat, or any of the Fedora Cores.
Thanks for the help guys!
JR..
BTW, I've been keeping a living log of my Fedora Core install and configuration procedures. Hopefully once everything is running good I'll have enough information to publish to the web a simplified step-by-step how to for installing and configuring Fedora on Compaq/HP laptops.
