Madrake install and video problems?

I am putting Mandrake 7.1 on an old P166, it has an ATI All-in-wonder card and the problem is that when the install actually starts the video on the screen splits in half and is very dark, I mean it is like you moved the picture horizontally and the centerof the screen was bothe edges of the GUI, and I can barely see it is is so dark, the monitor settings do nothing to change this, any ideas.
