Well, the signs are good for me.

I had an interview for an IT systems admin position. I honestly thought I was pretty cool thruout the process and it turns out, the company seems to be pretty cool -- younger crowd, jeans and t-shirts, etc etc. I really felt I nailed a solid 'good personality' to the wall, and walked out of the interview feeling very good.

The next morning I drove into work... started my process... cell phone rang at 9:00am or thereabouts. The HR lady called me back saying "We were very impressed with you yesterday, and your interview went great! We'd like to do a techincal interview with our VP and Technology guys".

Anyhoo... I think it's safe to say they are enamoured with me... after such a quick turnaround from the interview (2pm the previous day, then a 9am phone call asking for #2 interview).

What do you guys think? I am pretty happy right now.. the location RULEEEESSS (literally.... across the street from ESPN Zone NYC -- I could throw a rock and hit it without tryin too hard), the commute is great for me... 40 minutes on an express train and then take the 1/9 uptown only 1 stop and I'm there... less than a block to walk after that. The money I'm not 100% about yet but I think it will be pretty good... I will see after the next interview and judge it on that. Company is young(er), pretty big, doing well financially etc.

Anyways, would appreciate your gut instincts... never hurts to have more opinions.

Damn you are good, I 've been trying to get a job in the city...but there is no love....i have to take the R to WTC and take the Path to newark, cost me 3 1/2 hour per day.
For a IT systems admin, what kind of qualification do you need? (skill, experience)

Well I don't know.. I started at my current job as doing help desk work... but I had set up a domain and server in my house for mp3s and gaming... so I knew the jist of policy editing and stuff. My company was upgrading from NT4 to 2003 because of compliance issues (ie, legal) and thus I got my grubby paws on that :)

Honestly, knowing Windows, Active Directory, etc... it's not really that hard. Systems administration for me, is just that if you set up your servers properly, buy good hardware and make the right decisions to begin with... your systems will be relatively bulletproof and you won't do crap all day long -- just like i do now. Problem is, that my job right now still thinks of me as help desk although I have the responsibilities of a systems administrator. So what better way to get a better job than to be 100% honest in what you do on your resume, go to the city with it, and get more money!

Cliffs:
started as helpdesk, now doing hardcore sysadmin work
needed more money, trying to get job in city
...
profit!

Yep - you start out helpdesk, you end with helpdesk. I'm finding that it is really hard to get "promoted" in IT roles. Usually your entry level crap follows you on up the ladder of responsibility, without the proper pay adustment either.

So congrats.

No joking.. I got a $5k bump in salary after threatening to quit -- but even that 5k is a joke compared to what I should be making given my responsibilities.

It's easier for somebody else just to start me out at the salary I should be making now. It's too bad too, because I really like working here -- eveybody loves me and I just got 'employee of the year'. They are going to send me on a trip to San Francisco all expenses paid... but I will probably have to skip on it if i get this job, which is fine -- I'd rather have the increased cash and easier commute than a single trip to San Fran and a big 1 finger salute from them every time salary comes up.

How long did it take for you to find out about interview #2? and then #3? Was it persistence on your part or did they just call you and say "comon in"?

They were fast with the first interview and the 2nd. Fast on the 3rd at giving me the date. But sloppy as hell getting back to me about had I gotten the job or not.

A right bunch of clowns imo...still going to apply again to them this year amongst other companies also though :p.

I made it to interview #2 at a company this past Wednesday... I'm supposed to find out sometime in the next few days whether or not I'll be getting an offer. One of the three people that makes the decision indicated that I'm his choice... now to see if the other two people agree.

And another company indicated that I'll have a job offer within the next month sometime... only thing holding them back is procedure.
