In my haste of getting my new box fired up, I installed the sata power and legacy power to the hard drive (installed legacy one when I was plugging in my second hd :( ). I did'nt notice until this morning when I opened my case back up..!

So, the system was up and running for a few hours, enough to install windows and play a quick game of far cry with my new video card...

my question is this: I know that i can damage the hard drive by having the sata and legacy power connectors both going to it. What are the chances that I damaged my drive, if really any, and second, can it damage anything else on the mobo/system?

Everything seems to be working great, and it was last night too, so I hope this was just an honest mistake and i didn't fry anything in my new system. Thanks

If everything is working okay, I wouldn't be too worried. You can check for system stability by runnin Prime95 torture test, and you can check your harddrive by using a manufacturer's supplied diagnostic utility.

But you probably didn't fry anything.

i would think the drive would be smart enough to sense voltage on both channels and ignore one of the two based on which bus it was connected. at least a newer drive. otherwise i'm sure we'd be hearing about drives frying from things like this much more often, i've never heard of this frying anything yet, and i KNOW you're not the first, so chances are my initial though is valid...

thanks for the link.

What is the best way to burn in a new system? Probably another topic, but since we are here, might as well ask. I normally just load some stuff up, use it and abuse it, but I'm sure there is a more scientific way of doing it.

Generally 'burn-in' is not needed, but I assume you mean 'stability testing'. Prime 95, memtest86, some gaming, and maybe a seti workunit or two would be a good suite of tests.

So, you have now removed the unneeded power connector from the drive, right? Some drives explicitly say not to connect both. Just because you initially connected both doesn't mean you should keep them that wya!
