Maddox makes more great points:

In HS, everyone (teachers, classmates, parents) told me "play some sports, you'll never have another chance to do this stuff again". I realized that not everyone wants to play sports, I saw it as a waste of time. I didn't need it to stay in shape, I wasn't looking for the companionship and the thrill of a win, nah - I chose to start working instead. I still have that job till this day cause I busted my ass every day after school to advance here. Anyways, just reading this over at Maddox's site made me think, was just funny to see some of my own thoughts in there. Even if you don't feel the same way, it's still a funny read (as always), IMO

Well, I didn't hear it until I joined the football team, then quit before the season started because I found a job. Whenever I told someone I found a job at the age of 16 (the ones who knew I started football), they'd say "oh, don't you think it'd be better to stick with a sport? You have the rest of your life to work!"

*shrug* it was no big deal, I'm just really glad I listened to myself instead of anyone else

hahaha i love his hit counter at the bottom..

As an ex-high school jock, sounds like someone is just a hater.

So, somebody in high school played sports and maybe got a little special treatment. And they are pissed about it. Whoppity-do. That really makes a difference in the grand scheme of things. Its good to see that Maddox is mature enough to gloat over others whose only crime was to <gasp> play football.

Probably about the same percentage of kids that played sports went on to college and moderately successful lives as those that didn't play sports.

Cry me an f'in river.

It's obvious he hasn't matured since HS. There's nothing worse than a bitter HS nerd who just can't get over it. Years after they leave HS they're STILL bitching about their experience, or lack thereof.

Indeed. He was obviously abused in someway during High School by the jocks, and is just bitching/whining/crying about it now. I know plenty of football players in Calculus.

I think the real reason for the resentment of jocks is that everyone makes a big deal out of a bunch of guys playing a game. Don't get me wrong, I love sports, as recreation. With a few exceptions, competitive sports are GAMES. Like counter strike or diablo or warcraft. The only difference is that, for some reason, sports are a huge deal. It's not that I dislike jocks (although I can't speak for everyone), it's just that I find it mind boggleing that some of them act like they are the greatest people in the world because they are good at sports (especially in high school). Here's the inside scoop, guys. You spend all of your time and effort becoming good at a GAME. Not real life, not anything that might actually improve society. A GAME. From my point of view, those guys are almost as sad as people who spend all day playing counter strike instead of doing something productive. Games are a great diversion, but dedicating your life to them is just stupid.

No. And I don't even play sports, but you are wrong. The football players at my school don't dedicate their fcking lives to football, I don't know anyone who does that for any sport here.

People who play sports in HS or otherwise don't NECESSARILY dedicate their lives to them. I played several sports in HS (quite well I might add) and still do, but I haven't dedicated my life to playing them. Sports are a good way to exercise and have fun. To each his own I suppose.

And what is it that you do? What's more noble about someone who spends his life becoming good at NUMBERS? One is physical; the other, mental. A geek will obviously argue that the mental is somehow a more noble pursuit than the physical.

While Maddox is right about some, there are many 'jocks' that use it to progress their careers.

Nothing breaks the ice on a deal than sports with most men. If you can get your client to like you, the deal is half done.

Same thought I had. Geeks seem to be thrilled whenever they have it even slightly better than the jock they knew in school. Seems to be a common theme.

Throughout history, it's been the ENTERTAINERS that have gotten public favor. Gladiators, actors, playwrights and, yes, sportsmen. You shouldn't be surprised at all that sports entertainment is so huge...but calling it stupid is just angst/ignorance, your post proves a formulaic "why them, not me?" rant.

hmm odd i didn't find it funny at all. I was called a nerd (even though i was on the football, baseball and wrestling team) OK i was a nerd i was in a computer club! heh

I enjoyed sports. i love wrestling. i spent many hours in the gym/practice. while i sucked at football (to darn small) and baseball i was really good in wrestling.

while spending a lot of time in sports i also received good grades in HS and went on to RIT. just because you don't care for sports does not mean the people that do are stupid or wrong.

this article was nothing more then a bitter man who didn't get anywhere in HS. Granted i have seen some of the "star" athletes in HS end up with crappy jobs and crappy lifers reliving there glory in HS. i call i the AL Bundy syndrome. Many of them went on to have very successful lives. While i am NOT a multi-millionaire computer nerd i still have a great life with a loving wife and daughter. I talk about wrestling to my nephew (showing him a few moves and workout tips) but i do not go out and talk about them all the time.

all in all i think maddox needs to grow up. this article was nothing more then a whining session. maybe he needs more time with his shrink?

oh and having the same job since high school is not something to bragg about..

Normally I think Maddox is funny, but that was retarded. Sounds like someone is bitter.

He acts like physical fitness has no point in this world. Oh yes, it is so healthy to be fat and out of shape.

And as much as he'd hate to admit it, being in shape, being a "jock" if you will, CAN help you in this world. Say you are completely equally qualified as someone else. One of you is a fat tub of lard, the other is a "jock". In today's superficial world, according to many studies, the jock will get the job.

Social systems are based on an objective evaluation of fitness, so it's not superficial to consider the more fit to be more successful. Many executive-level jobs require you to fulfill a large number of medical tests to ensure that you fit (pun intended) the position. A "fat tub of lard" is highly indicative of how a person might be in their job as well. If someone can't take care of themselves, how can they take care of a company?

I never played any sports in high schools, and I am not a fat tub of lard. Neither are my friends. Infact I know some people who played sports in high school, they are now actually fat and out of shape. Not generalizing, just noting my observation.
