So I picked up Madden 2010 at gamestop tonight, popped it in and started my franchise. I figured it would just be a test run to get settings right so that I get realistic stats, but thats not the point.

I'm not going to go over any of the stuff that we already know about (i.e. slower play, improved graphics, new features etc...) I want to talk about the stuff no one has mentioned. Unfortunately, they are gripes. And I'm not the type of person that gripes about Madden, I barely every do. That said, this is for the 360 version.

During the game, I can say there were at least 10 plays that right as I snapped the ball the game lagged a bit and hiccuped on me. VERY annoying. Aside from that, the actual game play was very enjoyable.

In the franchise mode though (which a ton of us play) I was extremely disappointed. First of all there is a ton of lag when going through the menus. The menu's are setup worse than last years, in terms of finding stuff. If I'm looking at QB's stats and scroll over to TD's and then hit RT to go to RB's stats it holds its location, which ends up just bringing you to what you don't want to see and you have to scroll back over again. Annoying. Maybe I missed it somewhere, but when I simmed the season to do a full seasons worth, I never saw an actual progression area. The players progressed, but it never told me how much.

Mostly though, something that just pisses me off is the lag in the menu's and in the gameplay. (All offline) I wonder if this is just a 360 thing, or if Madden is just fucking stupid this year when it comes to gameplay. (I can't imagine its my 360, its not like I have spyware on it or something).

Anyone else notice this?

The menus in Madden have ALWAYS driven me crazy. Convoluted, disorganized, and laggy. I want my console games to be "snappy"; Madden never has been. Still, the gameplay itself is good enough this year that I'll probably just mumble under my breath :) .

I'll try installing to my HDD, didn't even think about that. Honestly, I couldn't really enjoy the game with the amount of lag there was on the plays. The franchise stats were all out of whack as well, so I'll have to mess with some sliders I'm sure.

The game play though, that was very good. Very fun. Again, sliders will be needed to make it realistic, but thats to be expected.

I've had that same complaint since it came to the 360. Madden 2004 (with Michael Vick), for the PS2 has really stuck with me as being the best Madden to date. The franchise ran smoothly, it had the old menu system, it had the cheesy thing where you could adjust the price of hot dogs and tickets and whatnot (that I actually enjoyed). The "next-gen" menus have really been a step back. I'm glad that it wasn't just me who was bothered by it.

I tried the demo... wondering if it's representative of the full game. It sure looks pretty realistic, but the gameplay feels like crap. It feels extremely slow and clunky.

Yes, the demo is representative of the gameplay. Personally, I love it. I can't get enough... There's actually time for plays to develop now.

It doesn't feel realistic though. Coming from AllPro 2k8, everything was fluid and felt like it ran realtime; you actually had to make your decisions on the fly like you do in real life, and it made it fun.

The Madden demo for me felt more like watching an old nintendo game in slow motion. :(

The ability to change the game speed is a HUUUUGE improvement.

Is that just the overall speed like timescaling? Or does it just make everything move more lifelike?

Its the player speed. So for instance, on very slow your fastest players will not a actually be running a 4.4 40. It slows everything down a little more so that you can actually see whats developing. People want realistic but you also want to be able to play it.

If you want the speed of the NFL though, pump it up to very fast. They run/move like they do in the NFL. You just lose the quality of animations because they don't render as well at that speed.
