Madden 11 controls stripped?

Just dove into some Madden 11 for the first time on PS3, after taking a few years off from Madden. It seems like they took out 70% of the controls. You can't do anything on defense other than dive to tackle, there's no 'truck stick' (i think it was called last time i played a few years ago) or swim moves or line shifting or anything. Why did they make defense so bland? Or maybe I'm just missing something since I only played it once 😛 - I looked through the controls menu though and it just leaves most of the keys unused. Looks like the offensive side is pretty similar. No truck stick? No using the analog to juke? I'm confused. I'm pissed if they took out all these control options but I'm guessing I'm just missing something. Should be able to do more than control the players' direction.

I'm all for ripping on EA but do you know anything about Madden 11 or just saying that? 😀

I dunno, I read the IGN review and reviewer was taking about making big hits analog motion. So I don't know what to think. Also notice I have like no control on defensive players, they just act as if no one's controlling them for the most part. So I figure there's just a problem with my controller (though it is a brand new standard PS3 controller that came with the system). Controls are very unresponsive. I'm going to borrow someone else's ps3 controller and see if the problems are still there. If they are I might try and rent a different copy of Madden.

It's really weird but I think (and hope) it's just a controller issue and they didn't actually take the player out of the game in Madden 11.

Also in the play book left play is square (correct!) middle play is X (correct) and right side play is triangle ( NOT CORRECT! as triangle is on the top of the button layout) EA is retarded. They basically re-did all of the controls for PS3 madden when the PS2 controller is the exact same layout.

I know they removed the speed button from Madden 11, but that is all I am sure about. I refused to buy Madden 11 this year -- 10 is good enough. I'm tired of EA's antics. I did buy NCAA 11 this year because it actually was a huge improvement and I can tell you that the hit stick, for example, is there but MUCH harder to use at first. Once you're used to it, it is fine.

I'm also speaking from experience. EA is notorious for removing features and then re-introducing them as "new" features a few years later. Online dynasty is the big one that comes to mind.

You mean the sprint button Indy? That's just turned off by default. You can turn it back on. Also you can still do the truck stick. I plow over my 9 year old son every chance I get 🙂

Honestly, I don't notice any differnce in the (post-snap) controls at all over last years. I hate the pre-snap changes though. The old method was way more intutive I thought.

*I'm playing on the 360

First time back at madden 10 as well here. I noticed too that on defense that there are no more swim moves while as a D-lineman to try to get to the quarterback easier. Kind of frustrating.

But on a side note I was playing last night (Thanks, still need to take you up on that payment plan), and I was rolling spin moves with a D Lineman and ending up spinning right into the oncoming running back several time. It was sweet. No bum rush though sucked.

Well that's good to hear. Where do you enable the sprint button?

I just need to look over the manual. I don't know how to shift the line, select man coverage for an individual player, move the DBs up, or move them back. Also don't know how to change WR routes on the fly before snapping the ball. I need to get re-edjumacated.

Interesting. A friend just told me it wasn't there and it actually made the game more realistic by not having it.

I just could not bring myself to buy Madden this year. This is the first year since 2001 that I have not purchased it. I've been thinking about subscribing to SI and noticed that it comes free with a subscription, but that kind of made me steer clear of the subscription. :awe: I don't want to abandon Cuda in our Madden 11 boycott.

You have to use shifts and stunts to effectively get to the QB, along with bringing heat from corners or LBs on occasion. You can also use nanos and overpower the line, but that doesn't always work. One tactic I've found is that if you're a DL, you can back off the line into an apparent "zone" coverage, wait for the gaps to form, and THEN try to rush the QB.

It works in NCAA 11 as well, but I really hate metagaming like that in these football games. There are a bunch of ways to "trick the computer" but it's really lame and in no way true to football.

I really don't consider it an AI glitch because it doesn't work even a majority of the time. Delayed blitzes like that are a tactic used in the NFL, which is actually why I even bothered trying it in the game.

With the suction blocking in all EA games, you'll be lucky to even get a sack per game using the tactic above.

Seems to be very different in my 1-2 star NCAA OD. If you drop a DT/DE or spread a DE out very wide, it's like the OT completely forgets about him and ignores him when you bring him. Perhaps it's just the low awareness of the 1-2 star teams, but it's not really true to form.

Been playing this game for a week and the hitstick is still nowhere to be found. Nothing happens you hit the analog stick up on the controller, on offense or defense. This game is absolutely no help when it comes to controls. They don't give you any good info, and they info they do give you (controls menu) is completely wrong. Can't find a manual for this game online anywhere :x

I'm still curious if there's something wrong with the controller that came with my PS3 or if there might be something wrong with the game (I think it might be PAL version while I have US console...long story...so that could be the problem)

Anyways, I have very little control of this game, and none at all on defense. Might as well let the computer control my guy on defense.

And you're a president of the "fuck Madden club"?

Well, in fairness, I got an Xbox in 2007 and it wasn't until 2009 that EA actually released a decent next-gen Madden. Madden 10 was a fair upgrade to it as well. 2011? Not so much.

Plus, my brothers and I used to always have leagues and since we really don't do that anymore, it makes it easier.

Madden 2011 literally had no features that I consider an upgrade over 2010. Had EA charged $30 for it, I might have bought it for the updated rosters and any AI tweaks. $60? No way.

Argggg...I actually liked Madden 10 on the PS2 better. I have 11 for the ps3 now. I love how when you play QB in superstar mode, defenses like the Pats suddenly become elite. Am I really supposed to believe that Banta-Cain can sack me 5 times in one game? Or how the Colts have a D where they have a secondary that can run from one side of the field to other at the speed of a Porsche? Or how passing to a wide open Andrea Johnson yields an incomplete pass because he lets the pass just fall to his side.

gotta be one of the potential issues you suggested.
I've played many games. All the old controls are still there on the 360. That's all I can tell you.

I actually like this year's Madden quite a bit. I've had no major complaints.
