Well it looks like EA has finally integrated gang tackling.
To paraphrase a comment made on those forums, maybe by the time the exclusive rights agreement is up we'll have something on par with NFL 2K5.
Seriously, if we had high quality half time shows and Sportscenter based highlights in season mode last generation, how can we just now be getting gang tackling.
If the NFL2K series was still going we would have had PTI segments, meetings with team doctors, scouting combines and all sorts of neat innovations by now.
But, we're just stuck with a roster updated version of madden 2002, which is why I just download updated rosters for 2k5 and play my football on my old xbox *sigh*

Regardless of whether you believe it or not, the current state of football games is WAY above and beyond NFL2K5. Could it be even higher without exclusivity rights? Absolutely. But those of you holding on to your precious NFL2K5 and refusing to give current Madden games a fair shake, you're only hurting yourself.

Back to the subject on hand, EA is implementing a new animation system this year to compete with the Backbreaker vaporware game/engine, at least that's my opinion.

that actually looks pretty damn cool and authentic.

i like how the refs can blow the play dead from forward progress too.

I've given them a fair shake.
The attempt at adaptive AI last year was a train wreck.
Instead of basing off of game play, they used the bizarre VR-zone or whatever they called it.
Even if you were horrible, the QTE-like events made it so that anyone with half a brain would have the running game default to all-madden.
Then, when you tried to actually play the game you would get killed every time you tried to run ball (assuming you were just an average fan).
The more logical solution would have been to use the same default difficulty level as years prior as a baseline, then adjust as you actually played the game.
In this manner, as the player gets better, so does the AI.
Instead you end up with a pendulum-like pattern of the AI getting nerfed after destroying you the first game, then hulked back up after you run for 300 yard on little kid mode.
Also, the o-line and d-line play of 2k5 are miles ahead still.
Yes, madden is the prettier game now, but in terms of actual football it is light years behind.

Looks good..

I'm going to have to tap into my 15ish years experience of video game football to get my team (Lions) to the superbowl this year.

Going to be quite the challenge considering the overall team rating is probibly going to be in the 20's.

Haha, that or sign a bunch of FA's to bolster the roster a bit.
I'm pretty lucky as a steelers fan that they've always been respectable at the very least for most of the video game era (with the exception of tecmo).

Christ, don't post a video when you're just going to flash your fan-boy BS right afterwards.

Sorry, not your messiah.
Also you might want to check your sarcasm, I'm getting a 404 over here on it.

"it gives it a more physics based feel to it"

How about you take 10% of the trillion dollars you make every year and actually USE physics for the fucking game instead of N64 animations.

You know, they say that every single year. "THIS year is the year for gang tackling!"

There's been enough innovation in the titles for me to pony up each year, but this year, there better be more than just that.

Madden 09 was a GREAT game, but I took serious issue with how the AI's D would lock down the entire passing game or the entire running game. If you passed 51% of the time in the first half, you could not get a single completion in the second half. Same goes for the running game.

It was annoying, because you couldn't play fluid football. That needs fixed.

I'm not sure if they just made Pittsburgh's passing game that dominate, or if my inner nerdom just shines that brightly but I found 09's passing game to be the only phase of the game that felt complete.
Sure, sometimes the AI would botch routes and the safeties were just morons in general, but I never really had any issues.
However, I only played a handful of games so take that into consideration.

I had to be pessimistic, but I can see this gang tackling animation turning into something we see on 35% of plays. The first game it'll look cool and be fun trying to bust through the gang tackle, but after that you're just going to be like "God damn this bullshit, everytime I get gang tackled, it happens 40 plays a game, I'm so sick of it!" Variety in animations is the key, if they overdo it then it negates the impact of them even having it in there to begin with.

Switching to a physics engine would solve ~98% of the problems with this game. Greed is such a wonderful thing

2 players on the cover. Man, they really are tempting fate with the Madden curse in 2010.
