Madden 06 Controls

This is really unbelievable, even for EA. Not only are the controls bound so that you cannot independently map offense and defense, but in some of the game modes you can't remap the controls at all. I have a PS2 controller hooked up to the PC through an adapter and the default controls in madden are nothing like how it is on a real PS2 and there is nothing I can see to do about it. Mapping buttons to the keyboard would require using the keyboard control option, making playmaker, hit stick, truck stick and a bunch of other things not work. Did someone play this game once before they sent it out the door?

I know, I hate how PC sports games have such mucked up controls that even with a PS2 or Xbox controller hooked to your computer, you still can't get the controls as they were on those. Now I'm a straight-up PC gamer, but some games feel way more natural with the console-style mapping that everyone knows (i.e. Grand Theft Auto games) but they still don't let you set it up!

NHL2004 and Madden 2004 I was able to get pretty close to the consoles.

I'm thinking about competing in the Madden challenge to win $100,000. The problem is I'm not familiar with the Madden games nor football in general. Strategy-wise is there any advantage/disadvantage in choosing a particular team or are they all equally competitive in the game? Should I practice with the Eagles since McNabb is Madden mascot this time around.

What makes a madden pro gamer? Is it knowing each team's weaknesses and strength?

The tournament will be played on xbox but I'll be practicing on the PC since I don't own an xbox. Hopefully, the layout is the same.

I've never owned a console (at least not since the original nintendo and the atari 2600 before that), so I have no idea how the controls are layed out on other versions of the game... but I just got Madden 2006 this weekend along with a logitech rumble II gamepad and I loved the game. I absolutely suck at the game lol, but it's fun nevertheless. The controls don't seem bad to me at all, other than the fact that there are so many things you can do that remembering all the possible button combinations is damn near impossible early on. But who knows what a little practice can do

I am rather surprised that there is no option to remap the controls though. The last game I bought from EA Sports before this was NHL 2004, and you could pretty much remap everything in that game so it seems strange that you wouldn't be able to do the same in Madden.

It definitely sucks not being able to save remapped controls. I just re-learned the default controls and am playing just fine.

I broke down and picked up a cheap logitech ps2 controller knock off and Madden is working a lot better, but there was no reason for me to have to do this. The face buttons are numbered counterclockwise instead of clockwise on the adapter, so the default controls are now pretty much in line with the PS2.

For GTA games there is a program that will map your controls exactly as the PS2 version is, but the name escapes me. I beat San Andreas using it.

And I wouldn't bother competing in a Madden tournament if you're asking questions like that. To be good you need a good knowledge of some basics of football playcalling and strategy, a good knowledge of the players (more importantly, their ratings) and a lot of practice. The control scheme in a modern football game is extremely powerful and complex and will take a long time to learn how to use all of it. And specifically, McNabb is not the best passer or most mobile QB, but he is a very good balance, an argument could be made for him being the best choice. The Eagles are in my opinion the best team in this year's Madden, but by the ratings it's the Pats.

Madden is offering a rookie tournament as well this year... no $100,000 payout, but it could still be a lot of fun to play in!
I was thinking about participating in that just for the fun of playing in it, but like you I only play on PC and the tournament is on X-Box.. so I probably won't go. The one in Detroit though is pretty close to me so it could be fun...
