It's really just the first 2 episodes back-to-back, but after seventeen months of waiting a two-hour dose of Mad Men is going to be nice. The show doesn't get much discussion around here, I'm guessing because it's not about zombies or being stranded on an island or families fighting for a throne, but it's hard to argue a show that's 4-out-of-4 with Best Drama Emmys isn't up there as the best TV has to offer.

Season 4 was so good that it's tough to imagine the show getting much better, but IMO each season has surpassed the previous one and with such a long break to get this one done I expect some quality writing to rival last season. As far as expectations goes, typical Matt Wiener has not given us anything to go on by way of ads and media other then skirts being shorter and to expect new characters, but I personally think Cooper will stay gone, Harry will become a partner, and Pete Campbell will be instrumental going forward. I'm also hoping the death of Lucky Strike means Sal will be back as well. And will Don be able to keep it in his pants now that he's married again? Hmmm, doubtful.

I'm watching some TV now on Sunday morning (which I never do). ALL the channels are talking about Mad Men being returned... like NON STOP.

I've been looking for a good series to get into. Is this good? I love Breaking Bad/Entourage/House/etc...

The reason for that is probably because of the long lay off. AMC did it to themselves, but they're afraid they lost many of the casual fans because of the 17-month break and they probably feel the need to plaster the premier where ever they can to get those people back.

Is it a good show? I'm biased, but yes. Can it be boring in spots? Sure, especially considering the setting/theme, but all shows are like that and the boring parts are at least still very well acted and don't feel drawn out. And even though Don Draper is the main man there are many moving parts and characters that bring the show together.

How does it compare to the shows you listed? Well, to me Breaking Bad is the best of that bunch and got me into watching the AMC productions, which I then used as a measuring stick against the other shows. Now, I LOVED Breaking Bad, but to my surprise Mad Men actually surpassed it and is the new measuring stick for me, and I would never have got that impression after its first season (kind of slow, lots of character development without many big moments) but as I said in the OP it got better and better and better. So I say give it a shot, watching from the beginning would be best but honestly the more recent episodes are so good it might be better to start from Season 4 if you're apprehensive.

I hope it bombs in ratings. AMC took budget from TWD for this, despite season 2 breaking cable rating records, so this bombing in ratings would be salt in the wound.

I no longer have cable! D: :(

Been a huge fan since the first episode, so I'll have to wait even longer.

Doesn't matter now, they got a 3 year contract to (presumably) finish the show, so regardless of ratings the financial stuff has already been worked out. Frank Darabont didn't quit over money either, and I don't care how many rating records it breaks the show is not the same without him at the helm.
