The European Union says mad cow disease has been detected in a goat slaughtered in France in 2002. It's the first recorded case of the brain-wasting disease in an animal other than a cow.
Initially, scientists believed the goat had scrapie, a disease related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
The EU commission indicated more testing will be performed to determine if it's an isolated incident.
