My physics teacher at school tried to tell me that
A) Macs are cheaper than PCs
B) Macs are faster than comparably priced PCs
C) Macs are more durable than PCs

*All PCs are assumed to be running windows and used as desktops*

Anybody have any benchmarks to refute his claims?

Macs are more expensive than PC's
Macs are faster in some areas (ex. Graphic Programs, RC5)but if you bought a pc w/the price it cost you to get that mac it would be very close.
Macs crash all the time.
Macs can't do gaming, well not very good at least.

Your teacher is pretty wack if you ask me.

It's been forever since I've been within spitting distance of a Mac, but as I recall, PC are much more customizable. That's why it's tough to find a 'standard' PC.

Macs are just internet machines and that's it. Every time a friend asks me what type of computer they should get I ask them what they want to use it for if they say internet I tell them to get a Mac. If they want it for anything else a PC.

Also, MACs are more idiot proof than PCs. If you want a computer but don't want to learn what a computer can do..get a mac. I think that most schools use macs for that very reason.

Well we are biased because the majority of us are extremely literate in computer use. The majority of the country is not however, so Macs do make sense in certain cases for people who can afford the ease of use.

This is not an argument. Macs are not better than PCs, and PCs are not better than Macs. They are different. Let's speak no more of this. I have no respect for people who insist on trying to prove that their preference is superior, on either side.

azazyel, mosdef, I think you two put your finger on it, I just couldn't get the thought to form. Macs are extremely idiot proof. That is why it took me forever to accept windoze. I started out in the days of DOS, when you could force a computer thru any number of hoops, but you could also seriously hose it with one command. Windoze removed some of that 'dangerous' aspect for clusers (CLUless uSERS) and let them use a computer by holding their hand the entire way. Same thing for Macs, they've just been doing it for a little longer.

Also, if it wasn't for Job's obsession with not letting any other company write software for the Mac, we would all probably be using them now.

And you laughed at him right? Sorry Matt, but Mac's are inferior. Just don't let him pull the "photoshop" card on you. That's rigged, and everyone knows it.

And it gets worse: The newer ones with the optical mice- the entire mouse is the button. It's utterly hopeless

Ask your teacher why I see more and more Macintosh users migrating to Windows? :)

This thread makes me want to bring back my old signature. ;)

Have to agree w/Killbat
I've been a Mac and PC Owner for years, PC's Excel for some things, and Mac's Excel for others.... just depends on what your gonna do!! For Example - I work in a Pro-Tools Studio (32 Track Digital Hard Disk Recording) all Mac (TDM) Based, on a Power Computing 120, that's right a 120mhz based 603e Processor, 128 megs of RAM, and it runs Circles around Pro Tools LE (native), which I run at Home, on my Athalon550. Theoretically my Athalon setup running the Software Native, should run about 10 Times faster, but It dosen't, Except for some Disk Dased Operations (edits, copies, etc) it actually runs a LOT slower!!
The Other side to the coin- I Run Photoshop 5 on the G4 500 Laptop we have, and It Renders most 3D Plugins a LOT slower than my Athalon does (with comparable hardware).
This is a subject that gets me worked up, I hate when People Dog the Mac Platform, but hate just as much when Mac Addicts dog the PC Format.
Mac's arent better at everything, and neither are PC's. You ever hear of a Movie Production Company running an Avid System on an Intel Setup?? Rarely!! or Perhaps a Mac as a Game Server?? Just as Rare!!
I have to say that my Mac Crashes about as much as my PC does, if not a little less, but many people, like myself, like to Tinker around way too much, and cause our own headaches!!
Anyway, I'm done ranting!! I hate when I do that!! LOL!!

Well I have recently used both. And at the same speed... I have an Athlon 500, and a G3 OC'd to 500. Both are running dual-monitors and whatnot, but I use them for different things.

-Mac:

Music Composition (via External Synth)
Programming in Metrowerks (C)
Internet

-PC:

Gaming
DLL Programming
DVD Playback

It's fun to switch around... but for the most part I use my Mac running OS8.6. It's rock solid, even for a Mac.

Mac's are inferior in software. The MacOS is horrible!

No multitasking!
No Memory Management!

We used to work on Mac's here at my work. Now we're finally moving to pc's. While working on my old Mac it would routinely crash a couple times a day while I was doing just basic stuff. Surfing, word processing, etc...

I really don't think that macs are anymore idiot proof than pcs. PC's just give the user more opportunity to fuss with the os's innards. Whereas all those files are unaccessible, completely, on a mac (which is another reason I dislike them).

Don't get me started on idiots. I do tech trouble shooting for an oline company and I always ask:
1. What type of computer are you using
2. What browser
3. What version number

75% of the people can answer #1 (I count it when people say Dell or Gateway)
50% of the people can answer #2

3% can answer #3

This is why I am going to install Linux on my new computer. If it wasn't for windows most of the brainless people would be to scared to turn on a computer.

To hell with Mac and PC............. :p

SPARC!!!!!!!!! If you want to experience some serious SMP, stick two dual hyperSPARC MBus CPUs in a Sun SPARCstation 20 with a Solaris install. WOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!

Unfortunately SPARC components are so outrageously expensive compared to Mac and PC.

I agree with mattyrug. Mac has it's own fine aspects and annoying misgivings; as do other platforms. Personally, I prefer PC, but can find plenty of good points to bring out about Macintosh.

Your teacher is completely right:

1) Macs are cheaper - this is true, I can pickup an Apple II for a FRACTION of what a new PIII 866 system would cost!

2) Macs are faster - also true, that same Apple II will then SMOKE an 8086.

3) Macs are more durable - again, very true. I have run over my Apple II, burned it, thrown it in the pond, used it with small explosives... and it is still just as useful today as it was before I did all that!
