Hello,

I have two Macs and a PC running from the same router connected to the same modem but the Macs are allways faster when surfing the net, mail, etc.
The Macs are both Dual 1.2 and the PC is a single Athlon 1.6
The PC is running Windows XP pro & IE, the Macs are running 10.3.1 & Safari
Is there a way I can increase the speed of the PC without creating stability problems or hacking as it may be.

Any ideas are much appreciated

Here is something you need to try.
I have a bunch of windows boxes probably running similar to what you are doing and I always tweak the OS for my broadband 3M/256k connection.

Here's a link for "Cablenut" http://www.student.ipfw.edu/~gottjl01/

There is a utility there that makes it easy to get the most out of you internet connnection.
On my XP boxes I get about 30% speed increase after tweaking, and even more on 9x boxes. The problem being that Windows is not optimized for broadband natively.

When you install the utility from the linked page above all you have to do is load the reg file that suits your connection. (in my case it is called "cable_fast_2k") then click the button that says save settings to registry and reboot.

Any ideas on what to tweak ???

System actually ran slower on bandwidth tests after install

PC is running 1.5Mbit
Macs are running 2.1Mbit

Guess I should be happy and not complain

Which presets did you use?
Like I was saying on my sys I have a 3M connection and cable_fast does the trick on my boxes.
Initially (with XP) I get 2M then after tweak I get 3M. (Network traffic dependant)

Maybe you should try cable_slow. or possibly custom settings.
The forums on www.broadbandreports.com have a lot of info on optimizing connections.

are you trying to start a mac/pc flamewar?, lol

i however dispute these speed claims, is there any other HW between the machines?

Hello,

No flamewar here
I have Macs and a PC that I built
The macs run 10.3.1 and run Safari which I belive runs faster and the PC has a bunch of crap on it and runs IE in Windows XP pro. The PC appeared to run faster before and I'm wondering id some software is causing the slowdown which the Macs would not be effected by. I run a cable modem to a router and those ports go to the Mac and the PC with no additional hardware. I get different numbers (bandwidth) on different sites and took the best and reported them.

I just want my PC to be faster before I do a complete re-install to solve any software issue which may be the cause

Thanks for your support

Nick
