Macintosh/Parallels/Windows/Quicken 2008 Problem

I have a MacBook running OSX 10.5.7 with Parallels 3.0, Windows XP SP-3 and Quicken 2008.

The problem is that every time I launch Quicken, I get the "Welcome to Quicken 2008" screen. In order to open my file, I have to select "I am already a Quicken user" then "Open a file located on this computer".

Then things get really weird. The next thing that happens is a pop up that says "Please insert a data disk in drive @".

I have to hit cancel which leads to a file selection window ("Open Quicken File") where I can eventually find my file.

I also tried launching from the .QDF file directly and had the same problem. Just for fun, I made a shortcut to it on my desktop and had the same result.

What gives?

I had weird quicken issues with VM Ware too.

I kinda forget what they were, but they were similar (constantly asking me to start a new account or whatever). I'm going to reinstall my hack and VMWare/WinXP/Quicken, and I'll let you know how it goes.

It's too bad Quicken for Mac succcccccckkkkkksssssss.

Thanks for checking (Get it? Quicken...checking...lol).

I am really disappointed that Quicken for Mac is so bad. Quicken is now the ONLY Windows program I need to run for home use.

(I need to use Windows for work for my billing software and WordPerfect.)

I look forward to your report!

Is this with using "Unity" (I think that is just the VMWare term - I forget what it is with Parallels).

What if you run a VM window and open Quicken inside the VM. This is possibly what you are doing already based on the description but it is isn't 100% clear.

I am opening Parallels, then running WIndows and opening Quicken within the Windows environment.

I just noticed today that I am getting similar behavior from Foxit Reader (thinks each time I open it is the first time).

I wonder if there is some Windows file(s) that is locked and thus is not being updated when I open programs in Windows.

Possibly a rights issue as well?

If Parallels is running off of a BootCamp install - may want to try running Windows natively (firefox says natively is misspelled - not sure how to spell it or if it is a word :)).

I am not sure what that means. I have never used Boot Camp. I installed Parallels in the MacOS

The Quicken data files are in the "Documents" folder (which shows up as "My Documents" in Windows).

Did you check the rights? It possibly will not allow you to overwrite the file that has these settings stored in it. I'd check the rights or reapply it for the entire directory (maybe even hard drive).

How do I do that?

If you right click and choose "Get Info". Then the last pane is "Sharing & Permissions", which will allow you to set who has read and write access that file, or directory.

The other suggestion is to turn off the feature in Parallels that makes your Documents in OS X show up in your My Documents in Windows. Then copy your Quicken data files over to Windows natively and see if your issue still persists.

OK, that got me thinking...

I moved the Quicken Data folder out of the My Documents folder and put it on the desktop. Now it works like a charm!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. We licked it!

What version of WinQuicken was she using?

I have not used MacQuicken but there are a couple reason I have not:

1. I use WinQuicken 2008. The latest Mac version is 2007, so I would be taking a step back;
2. Any online search re: MacQuicken turns up nothing but complaints (except, apparently, your post ;)).

I think the general complaint is that Quicken 2007 for Mac is about as good as '06, '05, '04 for Mac; OR Quicken 2001 for Windows. ;)

Plus AFAIK there are rarely any deals on Quicken for Mac, it's MSRP $69.95. In short, full-price software for minor updates annually. Furthermore, converting from QfW to QfM goes through the ancient .QIF format. So it may not be a bulletprooft transition?

Personally, I don't like shared/mirrored folders between host/guest OS but I think it's the "right way" for most end users.

I would not otherwise do it except that I have to for work purposes due to some technical limitations of our network system (I have the only Mac in the house).
