MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION BSOD. Wiped all my files.

Hello,

I have the m6809 notebook from eMachines.
I keep getting the MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION error whenever I do any major installation.
For example, I tried doing CHKDSK, Ad-Aware, Norton to see if I have any infected/corrupted files.
But CHKDSK and Norton keeps getting that MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION error and they don't finish.

I then tried installing SP2 yesterday and it too wouldn't finish the installation without getting the MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION error. I tried uninstalling SP2 since its installation didn't finish, but all of my settings from My Documents are all gone. Gone, I say. Windows XP Pro reverted back to the old shell without the fancy menus.

Is it my hard-drive? Because I got Best Buy's extended warranty and I think they can give me a replacement.
Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like it could possibly be a memory or chipset error or a hardrive error. I would take it back if a restore disk run doesn't resolve the issue.

Do you a factory restore disk? I would restore everything (the restore disk formats the hardrive and then run Norton Diskdoctor and Windoctor and see if possibly a malware program has screwed everything up) If the restore disk repairs and everything runs fine I would suspect a malware program but if the restore disk fails than it is probably hardware and back it would go
