Macbook Pros have some strong hinges.

My 2010 Macbook pro's hinges are still doing fine.

DO apple use some kind of premium hinges on their MBP line?

I have a mid-2009 13" MBP that has been used pretty much every day. The hinges, and the rest of the computer, still work great. Say what you will about Apple, its laptops are very high quality pieces.

Yeah, they build 'em to last. And I frequently pick up my MBP by the screen.

20+ years ago, they had some serious hinge problems. Must have learned their lesson.

I don't understand why more companies don't - strong hinges are hardly an engineering secret. Margins I guess.

The first couple of 11.6" MacBook Airs had crappy hinges. Or at least loose ones. Just bumping the laptop meant the screen would change angle.

My 2009 MBP hinges are fine. But also, my el-cheapo Acer (see sig) also has no hinge problems. I don't use that one nearly as much, but it's still quite old with not a hint of hinge wear.

Now that you mention it, my 2009 13" MBP's hinges feel like new, no sign of loosening like cheaper laptops. 5 years now and still going strong, well worth the extra premium incl. Applecare. I feel like this laptop can go for another 5 years :whiste:

My only issue with my 2009 MBP was a defective fan several years ago. A replacement on eBay cost $12.50. The installation would have been moderately easy except for the fact that one of the screws was stuck. I ended up having to drill that one out.
