Macbook Pro won't charge

My wife's Macbook Pro (15" 2009 model) won't charge when powered on. It charges very slowly when powered on.
I have tried to reset the SMC pr. Apple's instructions, but to no avail.

It is probably a defective battery, but can I verify that before buying a new battery?
