MacBook Pro won't boot! Help!

I am pretty tech savvy with pc's but my friend brought me a MacBook Pro A1211 that isn't booting. When I turn it on I get the apple logo, no chime or anything, then a blue wallpaper with a frozen mouse cursor in the top left corner. Absolutely nothing else. Any suggestions?

Have you checked the RAM?
Any chance you have a spare SATA hard drive laying around?
-Install OS X to it, see if that will boot

I did reseat the ram, I guess I will try the HDD next. Wasn't sure if Apple's had any sort of non destructive repair installs for their OS like a PC

hold down option and put the osx dvd in the drive - you can do diskutility to scan the drive from there or re-install. mac users have time machine - shame on him if no backup.
