I'm looking to upgrade the stock internal drive in my 2008 Macbook Pro to an SSD. Here are the drive's I'm looking at right now.

OCZ Vertex 2 120GB

OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 120GB

OCZ Agility 2 120GB

All three of these drives are pretty much at same price range (Vertex 2 has a MIR). My question is regarding performance in OSX (Since no TRIM support exists in OSX). Both the Vertex 2 and Agility 2 list "Supports TRIM" under their features. Is this native support on the drive or the OS? Also, I have come across reviews which say the OCZ drives have issues when waking from sleep on OSX. Has this been addressed via a firmware upgrade?

My main use with the laptop is development (also run some VMs) and some minor photoshop. Which of these drives do you guys recommend for OS X? Or any other recommendations specifically for OS X around this price range?

Thanks in advance.

TRIM is an OS-based command. And Mac OS X doesn't have it yet. But apparently they'll be getting it soon. However, even without TRIM, I thought SandForce drives didn't degrade very much, and you could get them back to near-new levels by just doing a sequential write over the whole drive. I don't know, though, I don't have an SSD.

As for which drive to get, Vertex 2 and Agility 2 are virtually identical. The only difference is that Vertex 2 handles sustained random writes a lot better than Agility 2 does; it's very, very unlikely you'll be doing enough random writes to see a perceptible difference, but the difference is there. If they're the same price, get the Vertex 2.

I am a very Avid OSX fan (tons of Macs and Hackitnoshes) and Vertex 2s are my drives of choice. They hold up the best without Trim. Go Vertex 2 and don't look back- I prefer them for OSX over Intels!

This is an issue with the Sandforce controller and it affects the OWC Mercury drives as well.

I do not think a fix has made it into firmware yet, but there are workarounds. I know that using "hibernate" instead of "sleep" works. It also sounds like turning off HD sleeping during sleep works (I image this would require more power during sleep).
