Macbook Pro HDMI port...

So my home laptop finally bit the dust and I really don't like the direction that windows is going. So one of things I've told myself is that my next laptop must have an HDMI port... I like hooking my laptop up to my TV with ONE cable. Are there any rumors out there about an HDMI port coming to the Macbook Pro?

HDMI and digital DVI are the same thing with different connectors. A cable such as the one Kmax linked to should solve your problem.

I assume you are asking this because you want audio out with the video on the same cable. This is not currently possible, but the MacBook Pros do have mini-optical out, so you can still get digital output to your home theatre.

I fully expect a massive MBP overhaul late spring next year and the removal of the DVI port to replace it with a DisplayPort, as well as a corresponding AMD graphics card that supports passing audio over it. DisplayPort can be converted to analog VGA, DVI or HDMI.

This is a shot in the dark, and we won't actually know anything, but no one will until Stevie gets on stage and tells us. The main reason I believe a refresh is coming is that the motherboard will need an overhaul for Nehalem next year. Memory slots will have to be re-routed to to the processor socket instead of the north bridge, and the cpu socket will change. This will likely result in a smaller motherboard, and seems the perfect time for Apple to revamp the MBP series while they're at it.

I, of course, won't be buying first-gen Apple hardware.

I know I can get DVI -> HDMI but I want audio and video... hence the purpose of wanting ONE cable and an HDMI plug...

I don't think your gonna see it on the MB/MB Pro line anytime soon.

The problem with an HDMI port is that it doesn't support any analog signals, nor does it support dual-link DVI, so the MB Pro would need dual outputs (both DVI & HDMI). Apple doesn't seem to duplicate things very often from what i've seen, as the only real difference from DVI -> HDMI is audio.

Also, i would venture a guess that a sizable number of Home Theater users use optical/coax digital audio direct to their receiver (as most TV's don't support HDMI to Optical over anything except its internal tuner), it makes the case for HDMI support even less prevalent for the MB Pro's target market.

I don't deny that it would be nice to have, but I just think its unlikely. We'll have to wait and see though.

The HDMI -> DVI cable was just a suggestion for an intermediate solution... I understand you want one cable, and the rumors abound about things like this, but they're just that.. rumors. And you could honestly, make a nice little bound together cable cheaply from RiteAV, or Monoprice, and it'd be quite similar to a single cable solution.

Like bearxor said, noone really knows until Steve gets up on the stage.
