i was looking into buying a new laptop with about a 3000 price range and i looked at the macbook pro and it looks super sweet so i was thinging to buy it but with the relase of merom around the corner is it worth it?? will the macbok pro get merom??? or should i just get a thinkpad when merom comes out

I think I read somewhere that the Intel chips are soldered to Apple notebook motherboards, so no upgrading. Right now anyone's guess is good about Merom & Apple. I'd say probably, but they may wait for Santa Rosa.

I certainly hope they incorporate Merom as soon as it's launched. Apple makes a pretty solid laptop; they are overpriced but as a student they knock off 200 bucks so that makes it less so. Of course, this is assuming that Merom turns out to be as good a processor as IDF indicated.

Intel's codename for the next mobile processor. It is basically a faster Core Duo, 64-bit instruction set added, and same battery life as existing Intel mobile chips.

hmm yea just googled it and i seem to only be able to find outdated info... any idea when it'll be available for consumers?

I think 2nd half of 2006, it will be introduced for the current Centrino Chipset (945), but early next year, they will put out the Santa Rosa platform for the Merom processor.

hmm ok well do you think it'd be avaiable TO BUY by august? that's the latest I can wait for a laptop, lol

Possibly, but only from a vendor such as Dell since they move supplies very quickly. I'm just going to get a laptop in June (for my college years) so I have the summer to play with it and the majority of Core Duo notebooks will have been released at that point.

its gonna be 20% faster at the same clock speed

Conroe, the desktop version of the new intel core is slated for the 2nd half of 2006, but merom (the mobile part) is epxected to ship out to OEM's in time for the holiday season, with retail probably early 2007 for us joe's

wait so merom will be out during december wow i really dont wanna wait that long

I heard that Merom was to be released the month after Conroe. That would make it August 2006. Hopefully Apple will integrate it then.

Well I am very sad and dissappointed at this find, but I just noticed this on the intel merom website....

"Intel is developing a mobility-optimized, dual-core processor based on the new, state of the art, Intel Core microarchitecture, codenamed Merom. The Merom processor will work within the Intel® Centrino Duo® mobile technology-based platform and Merom is targeted for introduction to align with the 2006 holiday buying season."

No merom until holiday season i guess.

LordMelkor:

That information is most likely outdated. I've heard that August is virtually certain.

And Apple doesn't have a very long history of using Intel chips, so it's hard to say if they're truly "slow." If anything they've been surprisingly aggressive: they announced Core Duo notebooks as soon as the chips were available for everyone. The Mac Pro (the Intel-based Power Mac replacement) will likely be announced the very day desktop Core 2 Duo chips are ready. If Apple doesn't announce notebooks with mobile Core 2 Duo processors in August, that will probably be due to a lack of stock on Intel's part.

August came and went, no release. What date are your sources saying now?

August was the announcement of Core 2 Duo for laptops... but the company didn't really ship until early September, so that's my excuse!

I've heard late September for MacBook Pros. The Photokina expo in Germany is supposed to have Apple as an exhibitor for the first time, and Apple plans to speak there. They might have new MacBook Pros alongside an Aperture update.
