Macbook not remembering headphone volume

For some reason everytime I plug in headphones the volume automatically defaults to halfway and it is way too loud and possibly dangerous to my hearing if I ever forget to turn it back down and just start playing music. If i never shut down the macbook, i.e. only use sleep mode instead of shutdown then it will remember the separate volume but if I shut down, the next time I boot up it does not remember the separate headphone volume. Is there anyway to fix this, without using sleep mode all the time instead of shutting down?

Thanks.

Shut...ting...down?

Why are you shutting down your laptop so much? Sleep mode uses very, very, very little power, the system instantly responds when you unsleep it, and unlike some other, older OSes, the OS doesn't get bogged down if you haven't rebooted in a while. I think I last rebooted my PowerBook over a month ago, my roommate rebooted my MacBook Pro about a week ago to install updates but it had been up for 40 days before that.

Anyway, since I rarely ever rebooted my MacBook I cannot recall if the headphone volume behavior you describe is abnormal or not.
