MacBook Air went crazy

Sandy bridge MacBook Air 13.

I was using it as usual this morning when suddenly the screen sort of got these weird colors and then it went dark. When I try to power it on, it makes these three low beeps. What is going on?

The RAM has failed, and since the RAM is soldered, the entire logic board will need to be replaced if you hope to ever use it again.

Try to Hold Command+P+R simultaneously and press power button. I hope this will fix the problem, because that 13" model does not have replaceable RAM.

This sort of thing terrifies me, and is why I bought AppleCare for, like, the first time ever for my MBP.

I just wish they would bring AppleCare+ with its accidental damage coverage, over to the Mac. Not sure what the deductible would be there, but it would be less than buying a new Mac.

If the Sandy Bridge (mid 2011) MacBook Air was purchased new with Applecare, it would have already expired by now.

Reading Comp fail on my part, I saw the "13" at the end, and read that as ('13) and not (13").

Ugh, yeah, looks like I'd have to swap out the logic board. Looks like a $250 job, with the risk that it might not work not to mention the time it would take to do surgery.

The computer is worth what, $600 now?

You're saying it's worth $600 with the broken logic board, or if it were fully working?

Fully working?

If I'm going to have to go through the trouble of opening it up and swapping out a logic board, is it possible to upgrade it while I'm at it? I.E. put in an ivy bridge logic board, or even a haswell logic board, to replace the sandy bridge one?

My 2009 MacBook Pro died suddenly few months back - one day it went POOF after I plugged in the charger, and it produced a faint burnt smell. Authorised repair shop wants almost US$500 to replace the logic board... no way I'm going for that. Even if I buy the logic board myself off eBay it's $120+... factoring in time & effort plus no warranty, I'm probably not going to fix it myself. RIP '09 MacBook, you've served me well!

I would look CLOSELY at the iFixit teardowns on the different models, Apple likes to move things around internally between revisions.
