Macbook Air + SATA optical drive as an external disk drive: is it possible?

I just got my shiny new Macbook Air, and I'm going to need an optical drive for it soon. I know there are plenty of decent external drives for $20-$30 but I've got an internal SATA drive just sitting around from a recently-deceased PC. Are there SATA/USB converters that would let me just use that drive as an external? I've used SATA to USB converters for data recovery off SATA hard drives, so might those work? It'd just be nice to spend a few bucks on some cables and use the drive I've got rather than spend more on a dedicated external USB drive I probably won't use that frequently, so if anyone can confirm whether this is possible I'd be obliged.

the USB to SATA bridge chip has to support optical drives for it to work and not all of them do and you'll need to be able to power the interal drive. You would be best off just buying a 5.25" sata to usb enclosure to put the optical drive in.
