Mac / Windows household: For my NAS, should I keep AFP active or just use SMB

My main machines are Mavericks, and SMB 2 seems to work great with these machines on my Synology NAS with DSM 5.0, paired with OS X 10.9.2.

However, am I risking trouble on my older machines? I have on 10.7 machine that I sometimes use (and it can't be upgraded beyond 10.7), and a couple of 10.4 and 10.5 G4 machines which are mainly for guests.

Answered my own question.

While it all works automatically in Mavericks, it requires a bit of effort to make network shares show up in the Finder automatically in Lion and before.

I can access SMB shares just fine, but I have to manually type in the URL, unless I go through the hassle of changing the settings manually on the older Macs in order for them to display automatically. Not worth the effort.

AFP is now back on again. Too bad too, because I only want to see the SMB2 shares in Mavericks, and AFP in older OSes. However, on Mavericks, as soon as turn on AFP, they seem to take precedence over SMB2 in the Findo for some reason, even though Mavericks preferred protocol is SMB2.
