Mac users:

I'm looking at a 400mhz slot loading G3 imac for a 4 y.o to use. Will this suffice? It'll be used to play basic educational games, surf the web, and maybe watch a DVD.

They look like a nice cheap alternative to a laptop...I can pick one up for $50 to $70

EDIT: picked up a 500mhz w OS X and 640mb of ram for $75...looks like it's doing the job.

My ex still uses a 233mhz iBook for her basic (Office, internet, email) needs.

My old work place (educational institution) had 1st/2nd gen iMacs until this Dec, slow but usuable. Make sure it has as much memory as you can scrounge up. We were gave them away to anyone who wanted one and apparently it runs better with Ubuntu than Panther. The biggest draw back is the size of the hard drive, at 6GB it's not much after you install OSX and Office.

A 400 MHz G3 is about on par with a 450 MHz Pentium III. If that's fast enough for you, go for it.

OS X will run on it, but anything over version 10.2 will be sluggish at best.

We found that Panther ran better than 10.2 on the older iMacs

Yep. I had 10.1 on my old 400mhz G4 and Panther ran so much better.

It's all about the RAM. You need to get as much as you can for the older Macs to run well. 512MB of RAM on Panther should run pretty decently. I'm using a 700MHz G4 with 256MB RAM and Tiger, and it's decent.

Take your own advice and buy some RAM. 😛

Whoever told you that is a moron. There's been a couple viruses created for OS X, but they have all been proof of concepts. None have been released in the wild, and once they start doing so, then you should get an anti-virus. I haven't heard ANY reports on spyware for OS X, though.

Every version of OS X has gotten faster and faster on older hardware. I would recommend running Panther or Tiger on the machine, and loading it with as much RAM as possible.

The machine would be perfect for Web browsing and email. Anything more, and it shows it's age.

its probably all about upgrading the ram.
perhaps the harddrive too, thats the big bottleneck. after that it should be sufficient.

the ones I'm looking at all have 128 or 256 in them, and a 9 to 19 gb hdd. They also have OS 9 installed. does that mean I should get a 512 stick and OS X?

Linux? Seems like a waste to spend another hundred on OS X for an old web browsing machine.

I don't think you can run OS X on it. So, no.

my dad runs OSX on his G3 350mhz

from the research I've done so far, it seems like a lot of people like to put 10.3 on their G3 imacs.

I wonder if I'd be happy with the OS 9 that's already installed, then it's just a matter of another stick of mem

I would stay away from OS9...

If you aren't familiar with OS9, it's going to be a pain in the ass for you. I suggest you upgrade to OS X. It will be easier on you.

What is bad about OS 9?

The 512MB stick should easily cost more than a used copy of Panther. On an old iMac, I don't expect Tiger to be significantly better than Panther.
