mac to PC firewire link

I was curious, as a PC user, I am going to be using a Mac laptop now with firewire support, and I want to directly hook the two up in some fashion. I suppose I could just do a network connection style, but also seem to be presented with the possibility to hook up via firewire (then using the laptop as a harddrive) as most of what I will be doing is syncing with files on my PC (main computer). Is this possible using the T key command on bootup with the laptop? My desktop is running XP - SP2, and the Laptop is running OSX 10.3.X

Just an update,

I cam accross this documentation: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=152307 which outlines IP over FireWire, but i was curious as well to find out something about the whole "FireWire HD" aspect of the MAC.
