Mac-style Menu Bar for GTK and Java/Swing applications!

Mac-style Menu Bar for GTK and Java/Swing applications!

That is what I've been trying to get installed on my Ubuntu setup. Yes, I know it's just 'eye candy' and all but I think it's slick looking and want to try it. Has anyone else tried it and had success? I tried it without success so far. I've posted a few times in there if you want to see my replies.

EDIT: Okay, I want to list what I've done and what happens. My setup is Dapper 6.06 fully patched/updated running Gnome.

  1. 1. I downloaded the .deb file from the thread I posted above
    2. I did a 'dpkg -i libgtk2.0-0_2.8.20-0ubuntu1_i386.deb'
    3. It ran for a short bit and finished with no output/errors
    4. Rebooted
    5. When my gnome-panel launched I saw the bar at the bottom but it didn't finish and I got into a loop of messages saying gnome-panel detected a panel already running and was exiting. All I could do is ctrl-alt-f9 out and I think I did 'sudo gdm stop'
    6. I did apt-get update & apt-get upgrade and it said libgtk2.0-0 2.8.20-0ubuntu1 needed updated. I allowed it to update.
    7. I did a gdm restart and was able to log in and got my desktop but with the regular gnome-panel menu bar at the bottom (not sure if it matters but I use only 1 panel instead of the default 2)

Edit2: Figured out how to prevent the gnome-panel looping but the Mac-style menu bar isn't loading. I apply the .deb file, kill gnome-panel, and restart gnome-panel. It reloads but it's the same default panel rather than the Mac-style I'm trying to install. I posted my ~.xsession-errors a few posts below.

Updated the OP with what I've done and what happens. Unsuccessful thus far... :-/

And don't rub it in n0cmonkey! 😛 😉

When you installed the Ubuntu update you basicly removed the custom gtk package you installed.

The loop message basicly ment that your paneljust kept crashing. With Gnome session management any program setup to start by default will be attempted to be restarted.

So try reinstalling the deb file for the hacked gtk libraries and then check out your .xsession-errors file in your home directory and see if that gives you any clues as to why the panel is puking all over itself.

My guess is that it's just a very buggy hack.

Thanks drag... I did that and while I can now apply the hacked .deb and restart the gnome-panel I'm getting the standard panel rather than the Mac-style one. Here's what I've got in my ~/.xsession-errors...
