This deal is not going to appeal to all, but here it is for Mac-heads who want it.

Microsoft is releasing MS Office 2008 for Mac early next year, and it will come in several versions. They have a web page up saying that if you buy any of their current 2004 versions now, they'll send you the best 2008 Mac version when it is available for just shipping, which is $7 in the US. Here's the link:

Since it seems that you can qualify with just the cheapest "Students & Teachers" Mac edition, which goes for around $120, and the new version will have a suggested price of over $300 when available, some might like this deal.

Alternative: Last time MS did a major upgrade like this several national retailers had great package deals which included about $200 of misc hardware with the purchase. That may be a better option for some, but this deal is a known quantity now.

(Sorry, don't know if there is also a Windows version of this deal.)

I use NeoOffice and iWork. My wife prefers Office 2004, but I like NeoOffice for the majority of my Office-ish stuff and iWork for when I want to do fancy or really easy things (Numbers rocks!).

Numbers doesn't do linear regression on plots...one major feature missing for me. Oh wells, I guess I'll have to stick with it for now, since Office 2004 is way too expensive.

I just used the word processor in Star Office to self-publish a book, and found it better than MS Word for text layout. Also used Scribus for the book cover, just to see if it could all be done with freeware. (Star Office for Windows is still free from Google.)
