Mac Pro: Cover Flow slow in leopard....

Hello,

I'm still getting to know my new Mac Pro. I was playing w/ the cover flow feature. If i click on my Application folder and I click the cover flow feature, if the folder is not maximized, cover flow works perfectly, however if i maximize the folder to the entire screen size and run through all the files in cover flow, the top and bottom of each file looks fine, but the middle looks out of sync. Only when the file slows down to a halt, does it go back to normal. Anyone else getting this? Is this just a Leopard bug or is there a optimization i need to do?

Mac Pro 2.8Ghz (8 core)
2GB Memory
2 ATI 2600XT
3 750GB HDD
MacOS 10.5.2

(tomorrow 16GB of Mushkin memory coming)

Thanks!

EDIT: Another question. Is it normal for hard drives that are not in use to power down after 5 minutes???

Can you take a screenshot of the folder that is having trouble with coverflow? If it has 100s of images in it (or more) then that is the answer... it is filling the RAM.

Thanks for the replys!

It was my first time or second time running cover flow. Now that I've gone through it a couple times, it seems to be running great. Maybe MacOS needed to cache it or something?. There is only like 30-40 images in the application folder.

secretanchitmanm its 7:00am (EST) now and I won't be home until 6:00PM. After I install the memory I'll take that screen shot for you. This mac is for audio recording. I was sick and tired of windows 2GB limit and much of my software was cross platform (but not vista 64 compatible) so, i bought the mac.

Yea, OS X relies on caching A LOT from what I've noticed. For me, OS X really takes a bit to get cranked up when you do a fresh install, and also when you first reboot, but once it's got the ball rolling it's so much faster than Windows for me, especially when you're multitasking between apps.

I can't imagine having 16 GB of RAM! Wow! I could run Photoshop, After Effects, Aperture, Windows VM, Garageband, etc... all at the same time in memory, that would be simply stunning!!!

For your hard drive powering down, you can go into the Energy Saver option in your System Preferences and adjust that. I usually turn that off.

Thats a nice amount of RAM. Wish I had that kind of disposable income.

Been home for an hour... tried every combination and this memory simply doesn't want to work. I place the original mac memory in and it works just fine.

Mushkin is closed so i can't call them right now. I looked on the web and what they sold me is a different part then what newegg sells... I bought 971596A which is said to work w/ a 8 Core 3.0Ghz Mac Pro. NewEgg has 976596A which from the reviews say it works perfectly fine w/ the new macs. But mushkin doesn't mention the 976596A part number anywhere.

god dammit....

EDIT: Mushkin's own forum admin's don't seem to be with it either. I asked a question there and the site admin replyed that he didn't even know MacPro's have raiser cards and wanted me to test the memory with out them.......

I see a return coming...

Were you installing the ram in pairs? My understanding is that slots 1&2 have to be occupied before you fill slots 3&4 and so on.

Sorry if the question is stupid, but sometimes it is the littlest things you know?

I had all 8 banks filled w/ the 8 modules. Only thing that happens is the light above the power button gives me a steady flashing light which is not covered in any of the documents for the mac pro. Then on the raiser cards there are a couple lights that stay on which indicate a problem w/ the modules, but no matter what modules I tried to get working, this mac pro still saw a problem with it.

i'm hoping its the memory and not something internal w/ the mac pro...

I asked the question about the memory a couple minutes ago on apple's forum and one guy quickly replied and said it seems Mushkin's memory isn't up to the mac pro's standard for the mac pro.

I never bought ram from mushkin before. I have gotten it from Crucial before with great results. Maybe they sent you the wrong sticks or told you the wrong kind of RAM to get.

yeah... I'm in the middle of getting a RMA for refund. Talked to a few people over there and they didn't even know what a Mac Pro was. They told me to try the memory w/o the raiser cards.. i was like.. "oh no, i want my money back now!". How can you sell "perfect match" memory and not even know the machine its being used on...

Mushkin use to be very very good.. i guess they went down hill...

That's too bad. I knew RAM with apples can be finicky, but I've never seen that poor of results. I even had Comp USA RAM work in my Powerbook. But I'd go with Crucial, they have a nice configuration on their home page which makes it easy to pick your system out.

Macs used to be real picky with RAM, particular with respect to the timings. But with the Intel switch, most of that has gone away. I guess since the Mac Pro is use such specialized DIMMs, that is where the problem is cropping up.

Yes, it was the correct memory. It is PC2-6400 and suppose to be for the 8 Core model. Mushkin admitted that they give newegg a different set of memory modules then they sell on there website. They said the reason for not selling both is

we apologize for the confusion we do carry both parts we simply do not offer the dual kit on our website at it confuses our configurator

They are going to try and send me the other kit to try before i go and get a refund.
