Mac OSX - I stepped into the dark side...

I'm an avid windows user. I've been using XP since before it was released. I've found my niche. I didn't like Vista when it was released. I didn't like it a year later...

Low and behold, I come across Mac OSX Leopard... Wanted to try something new. I watched a video, thought it looked cool. Main reason I didn't give a crap for Mac before was their ridiculous prices. So I thought hey, I'll just get an older machine for about the price of what a new PC would cost me to try it out.

After reading, searching, waiting (for a decent price)... I finally got a Mac. Here are my thoughts that no one cares about:

The Goods -
1 - Looks excellent. I like the layout, probably not a shock there. The laptop itself (black macbook) is actually quite nice.

2 - The keyboard. Nice to type on.

3 - Power connector. Magnetic connection was a good idea.

4 - The super easy install for Windows XP on boot camp. I've never had such an easy install for XP (Apple gets a freebie on this since they have limited models that they release, therefor all possible drivers are easy to include for the "PC" version).

5 - Gestures.

The Bads:
1 - I have NEVER seen a laptop wear so easy (especially after only 2 years?). The mousepad is shiny and sucks to use. The keyboard is still nice, just shiny.

2 - The huge mouse button is lame. One small one is all it takes. If it was smaller it would take less work to use. The lack of a 2nd mouse button isn't major since they have a gesture for it.

3 - Hotness. Man does this thing warm up and it only has a G950 in it. K?

4 - Weight. It is tiny but heavy.

After all that garbage, the real reason I wanted to post was the amazing fact that the OS locked up to where I couldn't do anything less than a week owning it. This being the "most advanced" OS system should not have this problem. Sure, in XP I'm hitting "don't send" for the error reports weekly, but it still works and I don't need to shut down and generally is never a real issue.

All in all, I don't get what the big deal is. OSX looks nice and runs nice - But isn't worth the price tag.

Nothing I didn't figure before buying it. Just thought I'd share. I mainly got it to learn a new OS for the heck of it. Maybe Linux is next? Sounds like a headache (I've used Unix somewhat so shouldn't be a big change).

Cliffs:

1 - There are things I like about Mac.
2 - Things I don't like.
3 - What is the big deal about Mac? Crashed on me 3rd day or so I've used it (I was running iWork demo straight from Apple's site).
4 - Just wanted to learn a new OS.
5 - This is a pointless post.

You actually get the Error Messages? Truthfully, I haven't seen one of those on my XP machine for at least 2 months.

I use several XP machines and I network / remote into literally thousands of them. I don't know how frequent they are on my home machine... It is all a blur.

Given the ratio, though, XP is doin good.

I own both Mac (Intel iMac) and many PC's...Neither crashes on me.
Sounds more like user error to me, or just plain ass bad luck with hardware.

I downloaded the iWork 30 day trial. When I started Numbers, it asked to view a tutorial or a tour (don't remember). I clicked it, It brought up a picture of an apple with a grey background. It sounded like I could hit keys but I could not get the software to close and the tour did not progress. Had to power off.

Have you checked out the command line shell yet? It's actually useful. :Q I've been meaning to check out Windows Powershell, apparently that's pretty good too.

I opened it but it didn't recognize any commands. I was lost.

unix shell. it's one of the reasons I considered getting a mac, but I came to my senses in time.

You must be the problem. If you're getting XP errors and as soon as you start running OSX you get Mac errors, the problem is you. I never have problems on XP or Vista, nor does my Mac lock up. I think OSX is an excellent OS, far superior to XP or Vista.

Your arguement, while appearing logical, is not.
For your equation to work, you must be equal to him, since all other factors are negated out.
Since that inital premise is a practical impossibility, your conclusion cannot stand.
Ttherefore the correct answer is, There are other factors at work not yet discovered which affect the outcome.

I work on thousands of XP machines (literally). It is bound to happen. I don't CAUSE the errors (generally), I just fix them.

I don't remember the last time I had one on my home machine.

Also if you read my description of how the error occurred, there is no possible way I could have caused it.

1 - Install iWork 30 day trial.
2 - Run tutorial / tour.
3 - Machine freezes before tour can really start.
4 - Restart laptop and run tour again, it plays through fine without me doing anything different.

Cause? I'm gonna go with the machine.
