Mac OS X Unix Help

Well I just got my first Mac a couple of days ago, and I wanted to setup Unix tools right away...I tried installing XFree86 via fink, but it doesn't seem to be working correctly. I looked on Apple's site for stuff about X11 and they offer a download but say that it's included on the install discs for Panther. (I couldn't seem to find it browsing through them...)

My question is, is it worth trying to fix all this stuff with fink or should I reinstall and then select these packages to be installed right away? If you think I can fix it, any how-to sites or advice would be muchly appreciated ;) But if reinstalling makes sense (I barely have anything on here yet at all, so it's not a big deal) How difficult is it for a total newbie to this OS? Do I have to worry about drivers and stuff, or are they all built in to the install?

Thanks,

Dave :)

The install is as simple as clicking the mouse a couple of times, entering a username and password, and rebooting. ;)

IIRC, the X11 stuff is on like the second disk...

I tried doing the Install Bundled Software Only on disk one and nothing is listed except stuff like iDVD and Quicken then I tried the other one but it wants to overwrite my OS... The 2nd disk tells me to use the first disk like I did originally...the 3rd one called Additional Software & AHT when I use that all it wants to install is Classic support...

Apparently it's part of XCode Tools? I'm installing it right now (I had before but didn't check to see if X was part of it)

I'll take a look at my Mac cds when I get home (if I can remember, I've got a lot of stuff to do tonight). Maybe I'll remember exactly how I installed X11 support. I remember there is an X11 icon somewhere in the Applications folder, but I dragged it onto the dock so I wouldn't have to find it again. :p

Just reboot with the Panther install CD in your drive, and hold down the "C" key - this should force your CPU to boot from the Panther CD. Then just go through the setup again, and install only the X11 modules that you need. That should be all you need to do. The X11 application should be in your /Applications/Utilities folder, IIRC. Then you can play around with Fink - it's fun - but I did remember having problems when I tried to install certain window managers, such as KDE...for some reason Fink wanted to try to install its own X11, but failed everytime. And of course I was too lazy to resolve the issue :p

BTW, it's been a while since I've played with a Mac, so I assume no responsibility for the accuracy of this post :p

What were you using before the mac.
I have been doing the linux thing for a while now...but I use macs more and more at work and I am falling for them...They are just to damn expensive though.

Mainly Windows and lately, like last 6 months Linux (I had messed around before, but this time I actually used it on a daily basis to do work (Suse 9.1)) I was hoping I could use iTerm instead of xTerm which doesn't seem very customizable... does anyone know how to get X forwarding to work under that or any other equivalent terminal?

Hi,

Not sure if you found the X11 folder yet, open a new finder window, then on the sidebar, click the Hard drive icon, and there should be a folder in there called Developer.
