I want to update my mac from 10.0.4 to 10.2.8 what files do I need as a pre requisit so that
Mac OS 10.2.8 will be able to be updated from my old one.

Since My Mac cannot be upgraded any higher than 10.2.8 as it is, where can I now obtain It?
or what must I improve Hardware wise to enable more advanced Mac OS instalation.

The Froogle Beta returned quite a few sources for 10.2, but you can probably get a used copy for less money somewhere.

Which Mac do you have anyway?

I have imac Indigo desktop.

I found and downloaded 10.2.8 On Download.com, it said that I need 10.2.6 as a prerequisit, 10.2.6 wants 10.2
so what do I start with from 10.0.4 Must I do all these multiple upgrades with so many downloads?
if yes what in betweens > do I need 10.1 also? or what do I have to get before I will be able to install the 10.2.8 which I now have?

You should be able to do an upgrade or a full install to 10.2. Just pop in the cd, boot off of it, and follow the instructions. After it's installed. download the latest patches through the software update program.

the 10.2 on e-bay said it needs 10.1. Are there different flavors of 10.2? or are the specs on e-bay wrong?

The specs are wrong. As far as I can tell there have been no "upgrade" discs out there.

According to apple-history.com the iMac Indigo is ready for OS X 10.3. I would buy a box of 10.3 (aka Panther), because its performance is slightly better than 10.2. Once it is installed just run Software Update and it will install the latest patches for Panter over Internet.

By the way, if you really love your girlfriend ;) , throw some more RAM in the iMac. 64 MB is a slowdown for OS X (it is more RAM hungry than OS 9).

I replaced one of her 2 128 megabites sticks with 1/2 gig so she has enough in that department, nearly 3/4 gig.
I did find some 10.3 but they all said we need 10.2.8 as a prerequisit.
This entire experience of her Mac upgrades seems like the old song "...the leg bone is connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone is connected to the..."
she had 9.something and I had bought her 10.4 and discovered that it would not work. The other problem is she is using her computer for her hand making jewelry inventory and lables and has done so since she bought this Mac 3 or 4 years ago. She is now totally dependent on her database, and even though I do not fear to start a PC from scratch, both hardware and software instalation, on a Mac I feal like an IDIOT.
She loves her Mac because her 2 hobbies are video and music editing, at a local TV station and a Local Dance group. She will not switch to a PC. :))

Seems like you were confronted with misinformation :( Since 2001, Apple sold the following versions boxed: 10.0.0, 10.1.0, 10.2.0, 10.3.0, 10.4.0. Every single one can be installed either after formating the hard drive or as an upgrade to an existing system. There are no requirements for the existing version, any version older than the upgrade fits.

All third digit upgrades are free. You can get them over the internet with the app Software Update. So the upgrade process for the iMac is

10.0.4 --(install from cd)--> 10.2.0--(run Software Update)--> 10.2.8
or even better:
10.0.4 --(install from cd)--> 10.3.0--(run Software Update)--> 10.3.9

chcarnage is correct. You do not need a previous version of OS X to install a newer version. My Powermac G4 only had OS 9 on it for many years, and I still have it on my G4 because I still use it frequently. (I actually switched to OS X in January 2004. I was on OS 9 for a LONG time. :Q) I actually have 3 hard drives in my G4. I added one. The G4 originally came with 2 when I bought it. Anyways, one drive had OS 9 on it. The other drive was just a drive to keep extra data on. So I decided to try out OS X. I bought Panther, and installed it on the drive that had no OS on it. It went perfectly. I then bought a 40gb drive, (which is my third drive.) and installed OS 10.1 on it. The 40gb drive had no OS on it either. It also installed perfectly. I didn't need a previous version of OS X just to install a newer version. :)

And don't listen to those people who say "You have to pay $129 everytime Apple releases a new update." Those guys are idiots. Apple charges $129 for a new OS. Updates have ALWAYS been free. :)

Good Luck! :)

Good call. And if you're buying Panther retail, don't forget about Tiger Up-to-Date:

This program is for entire Macs bought after April 12th that shipped only with 10.3. You can't just blow the dust of your Panther box and demand an update to 10.4. :) But 10.4 won't run on his iMac Indigo anyway as TungFree correctly stated before.

Damn, I assumed it applied to recent retail purchases of Panther as well but I'm wrong! That was part of previous Up-to-Date programs.

First of all I thank you all for your best wishes and efforts.

Having read all your inputs and every link you posted, I see that the highest I can upgrade or update her conputer Indigo imac to 10.3.7 as the apple Imac summer linc you posted, states.

However I am confused as to where to begin. Must I get another hard drive like Thin Lizzy did?
Presently my girl friend has 2 Operating Systems she can boot from on her Hard drive, OS9 and OS 10.0.4 on her indigo IMac. If I were to try and instal 10.3 Panther on it, Do I need to start a fresh install on a OS less data disk? or do I just plug in the 2 CDs with panther 10.3 on them and the present system 10.0.4 will permit 10.3 without any former OS like 10.2 or 10.1?

what are my steps:
1
2
3
4
5
6
ets...

You have two options.

a) Installation of 10.3 right over 10.0
+ less time needed
+ iMac is still able to boot in OS 9

b) Clean Install after formating
+ Will get you a slim out-of-the-box OS
- You need to export personal files before formating. Ability to boot OS 9 remains only if you make two partitions on the disk before installing 10.3 (and OS 9 on the other partition with the system cds of the iMac).

chcarnage,
I thank you. I did get the OS 10.3 and installed it just fine. I left her OS 9 and all preveous setting as it was. She is on a 2 week trip to Oregon and Washington and she can decide then if to back up and do a fresh install as you suggested, or keep what she now has, the upgrade from 10.3 required a password she failed to leave me and will have to wait till her return.

I am fine now and thank all the rest of the contributors as well it was an informative learning experience. Qute amazing....
