A professional wedding/portrait photographer that I know needs a new mid-top of the line computer. They will be using it as their primary computer for their photography business, for everything from internet/email to extensive photo editing/workflow.

Would you recommend a PC or a Mac and why? (Hardware cost is a consideration, software cost is not).

If hardware cost is a consideration, how much are you willing to spend?

mac, if you have the money its simple there software is what your buying its not the specs of there system they make all there money on software without there software i dont think apple would be anything.

I mean sure you could build an awsome pc but you still going to be running windows. if you want a good Reliability/Stable system i recommend going mac you should know how good tiger is since you have a powerbook. unless your a gamer or you going to use linux i dont see any reason not to go mac.

It really only boils down to the OS. Do you like OS X or not? I personally would stick with a PC, but that's me. I know I can get a cheaper, faster, quality build with a PC; I can also deal with Windows, however, there are some out there that must have a Mac.

A friend of mine is a profesional photographer, and he wouldn't swap his Mac for the world.

Personally, I'd go for the Mac. That's just personal taste, for a work horse. I prefer windows for gaimg, although both are easily capable of doing work, I'm just a picky son-of-a :D

The new Aperture Mac app might make a Mac worth looking at for the pro photographer, depending upon your needs. The only problem with buying a Mac right now is that the G4-based systems are seriously obsolete and will soon be replaced with Intel-based versions that will be much more powerful and possbily even thinner (EnGadet's latest Podcast mentions rumors that the Intel-based PowerBooks will likely be a lot slimmer than the current models).

Hardware-wise it is bit hard to justify the G5s right now, since it is really easy to build a killer Opteron 1xx-based dual core system that has the same specs as the entry level dual core PowerMac for something like half the cost. If you shoot a little higher for around the $1999 price of the 2.0GHz Dual Core PowerMac you can easily turn that Opteron into a pretty formidable and rock-solid stable machine (2GB of Corsair RAM, P180 case w/ PC P&C SLI 510W PSU, GeForce 7800GT, Tyan server-grade mobo) that would humiliate the base configuration of the G5 PowerMac when it comes to Photoshop work.

So it kinda depends on what is more important. Apple has a better selection of professional software, but in the Windows world you can buy a lot more machine for your dollar (especially since the 100 series dual cores are so cheap now).

We support graphics intensive customers on both OS platforms. If you ask the Mac people, of course say to use their version, and the Windows people can't understand why you'd use anything else. All of the software comes in both and works well on either.

The biggest thing may be where are they going to get tech support.
