Mac Mini Woes

I have a Mac Mini G4 I've had for a little over 2 years now, it's been running as a Linux server for most of it's life. Never had any issues with it. I recently changed to a new server, and put OS10.4 back on the Mac Mini and I'm having the most irritating problem. It will drop connections left and right. If I for example am downloading an update bigger than 10MB it will fail, or any file bigger than 10MB, if I have VNC or anything of the such connected to it, it will only be connected for a short time.

Now the only thing I've gotten to help this is if I'm pinging a website constantly.... For whatever reason that helps. I have sleep mode on the computer disabled and this happens while I'm actively using the computer.

Cliffs:
Network connection drops consistently
It stops dropping if I'm continuously pinging a website such as google.com
No other computers on the network have issues.
Clean install of OS 10.4 with all updates done.

Anyone have any ideas?

sounds like a bad NIC... but since you say it was running linux fine just before that doesn't really make sense. I would start by troubleshooting that. are you using wifi or ethernet?
