Mac Mini / Windows 7

First and foremost, i'm a PC user and will always be one. That being said, apple does make some nice hardware (albeit overpriced). I keep two computers, one for games and one for general use. What i'm thinking about doing is replacing my general use computer with a Mac Mini and put Windows 7 on it. This will dramatically reduce the energy usage and physical footprint. Does anyone know if there are any issues (drivers, etc) running Windows 7 on a Mac Mini thru boot camp?

As an alternative i'm also putting together a micro-atx build in one of those small form factor cases, which would be the cheaper overall, but i'm interested in the very small footprint of the Mac Mini.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no driver issues on the Mini. Some people report some driver issues with the trackpad/keyboards on the laptops, but since you wouldn't have one of those, you should be in the clear.

What about a CULV Zotac or else a Dell Inspiron Zino HD or something like that?

I agree though, the Mac mini looks the nicest. I'd look for a refurb. You can sometimes get some reasonable deals with those.

The other benefit with the Mac mini is that Apple includes all the BootCamp drivers with no crapware. A lot of the other companies have way, way, way too much crapware with their pre-installs.

Thanks for the advice. I looked up the Dell Zino on their website. I have to admit I do like the overall package, although it has a lesser cpu and isn't as elegant. However, it is half the price of the MM which makes the value even greater considering it comes with a Win7-HP license which I would have had to buy in addition to the MM. If only it came with the Core2Duo chip the Apple does.....that would seal the deal. 😛

Seriously you might as well just get a laptop and hack off the lcd, and you still have better price-performance ratio than the mac mini.

I once believed the same as you. I recently purchased one of these systems. For a basic computing desktop.

I must say I am alot more pleased with the flexibility with this then the mac minis. You can upgrade the hdd, ram, cpu, and wifi card in these down the road. As far as I know you can't do the cpu or wifi in the mac mini. I might be mistaken about the wifi though. I would suggest one of these over the mini's.

Everything but the CPU is upgradeable in the Mini.

Actually, for a "general use" computer the 2.2GHz dual core Athlon II X2 in the Zino should be great. If you want a better user experience, instead of pining for a faster CPU, consider upgrading the HDD to an SSD.
