I wanted to suggest an installation via Target Mode but the G3 b&w is one of the last Macs which lack this feature...

If you boot in OS 9 and insert the CD, can you select the CD as start volume? (Apple Menu in upper left corner > Control Panels > Start Volume)

He tried holding down the c key. He said it doesnt work. Goes straight to booting up into OS 9.

It's kinda tricky. You gotta do it at the right time. The option key may be easier.

He's got to hold it from pretty much right after hitting the power button until he at least hears the apple chime.

Ill tell him to hit the c key immediatly. Also, if that doesnt work, i'll tell him to try the option key. I'll keep you updated.

Like I said, it can be tricky. I generally have to try it a couple of times to get it to work.😱

lol. 🙂

I just talked to him right now on the phone. He said that neither the c key or option key worked. He said it shows the flashing folder with the question mark for a few seconds, then goes straight to booting to OS 9.

This is very odd. Never heard of something like this. 😕

it might just be that the mac is just not be compatible with os 10.3

According to Apple's website, it is even capable to run 10.4. Anyway, did you succeed, OP?

Sadly, we did not succeed. What I was going to do was take the HD out of his G3 and put it in my G4, and install OS X from there. (Its the retail version of OS X btw.) What happened was that my G4 not only wouldn't recognize the hard drive, but the dvd rom drive isnt being recognized at all. I have NO idea why. I removed the hard drive from the G4, but same issue with the dvd rom drive. I tried messing with the jumper settings, but went no where

I then took my external firewire and put the G3 HD in it. I took it to my sister's iBook, and tried booting of the Panther disc. But, the iBook crashed everytime it tried booting off the disc. So that failed to.

We pretty much ran out of options, unless maybe anyone else can make any suggestions.

That's bad luck 🙁

Maybe you can use Target Mode but the other way around than I first thought. You need a 6 pin FireWire wire and a Target Mode capable Mac (the G4 powermacs are, by iBooks it depends on the model afaik).

[*]connect the G4 and the G3 with the FireWire cable
[*]Put the Panther CD in the Drive of the G4
[*]Restart the G4 while pressing "T" on its keyboard

On the Desktop of the G3 should then appear a volume icon named after the Panther CD. Well I'm not sure how to continue exactly from here and if it even works... Either search for the CD in the Menu Apple logo > Control Panels > Start Volume, or double click the Panther CD and hope to find something useful. This idea is untested so far, on the web I've only found the solution for the constellation where the Mac to get an OS X install enters Target Mode. So you can of course try it but I don't think this attempt is worth buying a FireWire cable...

Do you still have the old OS 9 CDs? There's a hardware test program on them.

The firewire target disc mode won't be an option. 🙁 Reason is because the dvd rom drive in G4 isn't being recognized by the OS. Perhaps I should try with the iBook? Its a newer iBook (1.2GHz)

I have the original OS 9 disc for the G4 and I believe I have the OS 9.2 disc laying around somewhere.

The G4 iBooks support Target Mode so this step shouldn't be a problem. I just can't predict if, once recognised, the Panther CD will allow you to boot the G3 from it.

I think I know what the issue may be. I don't think he has the original Apple cd rom drive in his G3. You cannot boot off of a cd with any other drive that is not an Apple bootable drive. If this is the case, I might just remove the dvd rom drive from my G4 temporarily, install it in the G3, and install Panther from there. Hopefully, this will work.

Will keep you updated.

i'm able to boot off of my plextor cd-writer just fine on my beige g3.
