Mac App Store releasing at 12pm EST

Well, I'm still skeptical about the whole she-bang, but it looks like there will be a few apps that might be worth it. However, a part of me is happy with the old model of finding niche apps online and installing via downloaded DMG, which I know isn't going away. It's just a feeling of nostalgia.

Anyway, I just created this thread for the impending onslaught, to see what everyone finds interesting. I've already seen at Mashable that Tweetie 2 is finally going to see the light of day as the official Twitter app for Mac.

I mentioned on Twitter, I think it's both the best and worst idea. On one hand, they're dumbing it down and I can see that possibly limiting creative development if they ever force that to be the only method of installing apps. On the other hand, it's pretty balanced now (your choice of Mac App Store apps or self-downloaded apps) and for most people, this is sheer genius. Non-technical people LOVE the iPhone because it's so easy to find and buy programs that fit their needs and wants, and adding that to a more complex system - the computer - is just a fabulous idea. Now when your mom calls and needs Word, you can simply instruct her to open the Mac App Store and buy it straight from there. Easy peasy.

If it takes off, then my guess is that it will be a huge boom to the Mac computer marketshare. Now they're even easier to operate. Between that and Time Machine - both earn really big points from me for easy setup.

If they allow free apps too and it handles updating of the apps too then it will be nice for OS X to finally have some decent, official package management. Of course that requires people to actually use it...

Whoa!

It's out and Aperture 3 is in there for $80.. Dang.. didn't see that coming. 😀

Nice. Who needs to pay an extra $120 for a box? Perhaps this bodes well for future retail boxed pricing too of Apple's apps.

Apple's apps mostly seem to be loss leaders to push their hardware sales (as most of you know).

Is this going to be a new update to download?
Part of Mac OS X 10.6.6

Hmm... Apple Remote Desktop.. $80...... instead of $300-$500/user? And the lower price on Aperture.. it could be because its bound to a person.. as in.. not a software you can 'resell'.

explain apple remote desktop? you saying you have to pay for RDP services on a mac? I thought that was built in.

Does this allow multiple logins via Remote to my mac pro - say if i load up 48gb of ram can i have a dozen folks login to one system like terminal services 2008 server?

Perhaps i could expense the mac pro if many peeps could use it remotely at the same time.

Screen Sharing on OS X is basically VNC, or Remote Desktop Connection.

Apple Remote Desktop, pre-Leopard was the only Apple made way to connect to another Mac, however in addition to that, you could control up to (I think) 25 computers at a time, push updates to each of them, and all kinds of network management things. Not sure about the performance of having that many connections to a Mac Pro.

I keep getting an error when I try to download something. Anybody getting the same problem?

Hopefully, News Apps start to roll out and provide a much smoother reading experience. And for once, I will try to not mind the ads (only to a certain extent, but I think Apple will keep a good leash).

yah you need to agree to the terms and conditions - reboot and agree to the new terms and validate your credit card.

btw the DRM cracker is out - not that anyone would use it. most of the apps are pretty lame but i see that the mac has now regained another jump ahead of microsoft in brilliant marketing. (so go check out the macs i have for sale in the f/s forum) lol.

Just have to figure out a safe way to upgrade my hack to 10.6.6 and i'll give it a go.
