Vilma Soltesz, who weighed about 30st (193kg), was refused a place on two flights in October.

She died of kidney failure before a suitable flight could be found, after refusing treatment from local doctors.

Delta Airlines said every effort was made to accommodate her but it had been "physically unable" to get her aboard.

But Peter Ronai, the lawyer acting for her husband, Janos, told CBS: "They [the airlines] took on the responsibility to get her to Hungary, it's their responsibility to get her back."

Mrs Soltesz needed to return to New York from her holiday home in Hungary to resume medical treatment.

She suffered from kidney disease and diabetes and reportedly "did not trust" Hungarian doctors.

But the Dutch airline KLM was unable to get her on board a flight on which she had booked two seats to accommodate her.

She was then told to drive to Prague in the Czech Republic where she would be given seats on a larger Delta Airlines flight.

But, according to Mr Ronai, she was unable to be belted into that plane and "the captain came out of the cockpit and made her get off".
Mrs Soltesz died of kidney failure before an alternative flight could be found.

In a statement Delta Airlines and KLM said they had done everything possible to assist the family.

"Our records indicate Delta staff in Prague made repeated attempts for nearly an hour to board the customer, but they were unable to get her onboard the aircraft," Delta claimed.

Mr Soltesz is seeking $6m (£3.7m; 4.6m euros) in damages from Delta and KLM.

I can't buckle in! D:
Come on sweetie, do it before they see you not buckled in
---
Ma'am, why aren't you buckled in?
I can't get the buckle to buckle.
Please get off this plane, it is unsafe, and also you are making the plane weigh too much.

if she is so fat, i don't think buckle would of help, since her body mass will stay grounded during flight and landing.

Sad. However I do not believe the airline has an obligation to transport a customer simply because it is a return flight.

Vilma, who weighed about 425 pounds, had only one leg and used a wheelchair. She traveled with her husband of 33 years to Hungary on Delta and KLM airlines on Sept. 17.

They spent several relaxing weeks at a vacation home they owned in the Hungarian countryside. It was a trip they took almost every year.
Her illness, a combination of kidney disease and diabetes, caused her to gain water weight, and the airline said it didn’t have a seat-belt extender for her, Janos said.

He was also told the seat back couldn’t handle his wife’s weight.
In Prague, Delta staff told the couple the airline’s plastic wheelchair couldn’t hold her weight, Janos said.

The staff also couldn’t put her on the sky-lift elevator, the airline said.
On the plane, the crew, with help from the local fire department, was unable to move her from her wheelchair to the three seats assigned to her.

The captain ordered them off after 30 minutes of no success.

“We had 140 passengers on board, and they had connections and needed to travel,” said Lufthansa spokesman Nils Haupt. “The question was never the seat belt. The question was the mobility of the passenger.”
“She was very ill and did not trust that the hospitals in former communist Hungary could attend to her needs,” Ronai said.
If she was so ill that she could die without treatment, and you decide to go somewhere where you refuse to go to the hospital, even when you are incredibly sick, why the hell would you even take that chance and go on the trip in the first place? This is especially true if you can gain so much "water weight" that you can no longer fit in the same type of airplane, or an even bigger one than the one that brought you over in the first place.

Next time look for a cargo plane to transport the fatties.

I am sure a military plane can carry one or two at a time.

The lawsuit system really needs a revamp, or to just be abolished. It's retarded the stuff people can sue for.

I do agree big people like this should just go cargo. A Hercules should be able to do it provided there is no other cargo.

Based on what's been posted, it sounds like they made every effort to accommodate her. I hate Delta as an airline, but that guy deserves nothing.

People with that severe of a medical ailment need to be treated. They don't need to be taking several week long vacations in foreign countries where they are unwilling to accept treatment.

I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure the treatment for kidney disease and diabetes is not eating like a hippo. Maybe she's one of those magical fatties that had a "gland" problem. You know, where energy gets created from nothing? They need to harness that for cars. You fill your tank with 5 gallons, use 2 gallons, and the next time you get in, there's 10 gallons in the tank :^D

wouldnt those small 2 foot sections they use to demonstrate the "buckling process" work as an extender? stick like 2 or 3 of them together.

This. If you are one missed flight away from death its best to be near a hospital you will accept treatment at.

 What was she going to do if she needed emergency treatment before her scheduled flight?

Also - I have to believe the airlines have some sort of responsibility for the seats being able to contain her mass in the event of certain types of impact. I can see the headlines now:

"Delta sued by 6 families after family members killed by fatty projectile"
-A row of chairs snapped under the weight of an obese passenger after the airplane hit a bump on landing. The momentum caused the passenger to squish everyone in the four rows immediately in front of her
