M4H's little SETI Q@A thread ...

Rather than clog up the "Official SETI Needs You" thread with my idle musings and curiosities, I figured I'd make them here.

Where can I get the source for SETI?
You can't. It's a closed-source. So if your platform/OS isn't supported, you're SOL.

Do I have to create new accounts for each machine?
Nope.

Are there any ill effects of changing the SETI running directory? For example, if I run it from C:\SETI and then change it to C:\AT_SETI, will there be any issues?
No, but you'll have to change your shortcut.

Can SETI be run from a network drive to allow the local hard drive to shut off? I would assume so, but I'd like to check.
Yep.

Is the SETIDriver component necessary, or does it just make things more convenient? Specifically because I can't find a copy for MacOS 8.x.
Convenience only. SETI runs just fine from the CLI, but you'll only have one WU at a time, so pipe yourself through a SETI queue.

Unanswered musings
None for now.

Well, he summed up the two that were there when I started the thread ... But my mind runs like a domestic four-banger - noisy, obnoxious, and doesn't stop pumping out crap. 😛

Meh, check post/edit times 😛 I posted at 10:35, you edited at 10:37 (my time 😛)

With regards to Seti Driver, it is not required, you can use just the CLI. However SetiDriver has caching, and is an easy way to set it up, and can be dropped to the system tray without a window on your taskbar.

And it's only for Windows, not for any other OS 🙂

SETI Driver is just for convenience. It allows you to queue up work units and watch the progress more closely, but other than that it is entirely unnecessary. SETI can work from the command line solo with no problems, but be sure to pipe yourself through a live SETI queue to make sure you never run out of work units.

Edit: Damn you Elite/Lifer people always beating me to the post!

But I quoted you, didn't I? 😉

I've got another machine that will be running a Windows version. I'll set up a private queue on that and merrily feed the others in the house.

May wanna check with Adul, he has a queue that is publicly available. Of course, you (and anyone else) is more than welcome to use my queue. PM me for the addy if interested. =) I always like to be able to watch other people's statistics in realtime.

I'm not sure the hd will shut down even you run seti from network-drive... Ok, maybe if starts killing off some services... 😱

Seti_boinc is open-source. 😉
