Anyone know a good source for them that aren't insanely expensive and aren't crap at the same time?

I'm looking for both an m42->k mount an an m42->EOS mount (K1000, 20D). I just got a 50mm f/1.4 SMC Takumar and will mostly use it on the K1000, but will probably want to give it a whirl on the 20D too.

If anyone has any tips on this, would appreciate it. Thanks.

There are a bunch available on eBay. Both M42 to Pentax K and M42 to EOS. When buying a M42 to EOS adapter, avoid extra thin adapters. Ideally, you should pick one with AF confirmation - much easier to focus. Just type a search term on eBay. I would recommend Fotodiox, Roxen, but there are others. Also, check out

This site has bunch of reviews of M42 lenses on Canon EOS cameras (including lenses from Carl Zeiss, Pentax and others).

yeah, I know there are tons on ebay, but was shooting toward specific recommendations, as you listed. I've heard Roxen is pretty decent, but wanted to get some more input. I'll check out the link as well, thanks

I've heard (at least for the pentax models) that the Genuine Pentax M42 adapter is by far the best. I have one on my K1000 and it works perfectly.

yeah, I've heard that too. I'm just a cheap ass unfortunately :) And they aren't easy to get I heard. There's one on ebay, $30 shipped almost, but still a couple days left.

klong, didn't really see much on that site, sans maybe mentioning a mount.

i have the generic one (m42-->K) and it works fine for my 135/3.5. I just had trouble justifying between 30-50 dollars for a plain adapter.

I recommend that you remove the little tab that allegedly locks the ah heck into the bayonet mount because it got stuck for me and freaked me out till I slowly got it out. I first attach it to the lens first very strongly, and then screw it into the body. This way when i turn the lens it comes off with the mount and I don't have to worry about removing the adapter seperately. Then I use the "key" or my hand to remove the adapter from the lens.

I haven't had to worry about it turning off and falling either...then again I'd notice if it was moving and periodically check it

just read a discussion over at FM and the type of adapter to buy depends on whether the lens has a stop-down switch on the barrel or not. if not, you must buy the one with the flange so that the lever on the back of the lens is engaged. if the lever is engaged the lens will stop down with the aperture ring. if not it'll remain wide open and you won't be able to stop it down.

if you have the auto-manual switch, you don't need the flange because you can use the switch on the lens barrel to stop down for metering after focusing wide open.

I decided to try the roxsen ones. Let me tell you, don't buy from them. I have no idea if these are quality products, but their customer service sucks. I have not paid yet because I wanted to get a clear total on two items. The mention a slight discount, so I wanted to know the exact to paypal in US$. I've emailed twice, and used the ebay contact method once since Tuesday, and I have a feeling they'll leave a negative for no payment. ARGH...

Is there any m42 -> K adapters that locks on a crippled K mount?
I bought one a while ago, and while the lens locks on my old Pentax ME, it does not lock up on my *istDS.
If I have a tighter focusing lens, it's not uncommon for the lens to unscrew on the bayonet while I'm focusing.

i had the roxsen one, it was not a tight fit on my k10d, i got the authentic pentax one, much better fit and easier to take off as well

I've been looking for an m42 -> Nikon mount adapter, does anyone have experience with the ones on ebay? I'd like to give my f/1.4 Takumar that's on my Spotmatic a shot on my D40 just for kicks.

nikon f mount is almost a millimeter deeper than pentax k or m42. so, even if you physically adapt the lens to the camera, you'll lose infinity focus. focusing on something across the room may not even be possible.

you need an optical element to correct the issue. there are three issues with this solution. 1st, there is a mild teleconverter effect. so, the focal length becomes even longer than just the crop factor indicates. correspondingly, the effective aperture decreases by the same multiplier as the teleconverter effect. so your lens becomes slower. lastly, and most importantly, very rarely is decent glass used for these converters (the only one i'm aware of is canon's pro-only FD to EOS converter). so you noticeably lose image quality, often so much that it isn't worth using the lens.
