M16/M4 gurus...do you always tap fwd assist after reload?

I was never taught to tap fwd assist unless a round didnt feed right. Do you guys make it a habit of tapping it after each reload? The thing that got me thinking about it was counter strike.

I was bitching about how the M4 is all screwed up because the ejection port and fwd assist are on the wrong side and during the reload animation, the guy PULLS the fwd assist instead of releasing the bolt to chamber a round.

The custom "skins" you can download at least have the ejection port and fwd assist on the right side but the reload still has him pulling the charging handle after reload (as opposed to hitting bolt release). That, and the guy still pulls charging handle every time you switch to that weapon. Makes you wonder how he's able to do that every time without a round flying out the ejection port.

Anyway, enough of my CS rambling. One of the more realistic animations has him hitting fwd assist after each reload so it got me thinking that maybe some people make this a habit. Comments?

I was primarily a M60 gunner in my platoon, so I didn't deal too much with the 'pop guns' ( LOL! :) ) but we were taught only to mess with it if you had a misfeed.

no sh!t? All this time i didnt realize you were a Marine. Well, i guess that solves that issue, then.

I actually read the Army M16 manual online and it DOES say to hit the fwd assist after each reload. Of course, it probably also says to let dirt and grime build up in your rifle so it jams when you get lost, crash your motor-T truck, get ambushed, and have to fight off iraqis, too. *cough*lynch*cough* ;)

I was told to always use the fwd assist and with good reason. Apparently this was a "big" thing for the C7 rifle in the Canadian Forces.

This Diemaco knock-off was incredibly prone to jams in mild winter weather (-5c). This was with blanks of course, which are far worse than live rounds. Especially with the plugged up flash suppressor.

My experience with this rifle was shall we say... mixed.

USMC=US Military College?

Which Branch is that? Is it an officer's school, or does it train grunts?

THe rifle team, is that a competitive team? Who do you compete against?

lol my handle in CS is "Sgt Fuji, USMC". It always suprises me to see how many people ask me what USMC stands for. Sometimes i screw with them and say it stands for "uncle sam's misguided children". But I stopped doing that because they keep bugging me trying to find out how they can join that "clan"

USMC = Uncle Sam's Misguided Children....or the University of Science, Math and Chemistry :)

take your pick.

I do remember having to use the fwd assist a lot more in the field if I had put a lot of rounds through my rifle. but a clean rifle (which it should always be) shouldn't need it.

Absolutely. Always forward assist, give that bolt an extra tap forward. The C7A1 is a horrible horrible weapon, with live or blank ammo.

And if you get a SPECK of dust into that chamber, game over man.

The FN-FAL, on the other hand...that gun is a TANK!

That is what Canada used before the C7A1, Inch Pattern FAL known as the C1A1.

USMC, also: "U Signed the Mother****ing Contract"

I ALWAYS tap the forward assist, do it until its a natuarl part of the loading movement. You have nothing to lose and a hell of a lot to gain by doing it after every single rake of the charging handle. Its not as easy as you think to tell when the round didnt seat right, a lot of times your looking right at it and it looks fine but its not.

ESPECIALLY tap it after a brass check, I see a lot of young guys do a brass check then cant fire, well, since a brass check doesnt pull the bolt all the way back, it doesnt have the momentum to slam all the way forward, and often doesnt.

Negative. I said that CS got me thinking, not that I'm talking about hitting the forward assist IN THE GAME. I've never seen someone hit the fwd assist after each reload except in this game's reload animation, so i wondered if that was a valid thing or just another silly inaccuracy. Turns out the Army m16 manual recommends it but the USMC doesn't teach it. So i figured i'd ask around and see what other people thought.
