m1330 build quality still isn't up to par

Just received my new m1330. I have to say - I agree with a lot this user had to say:

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...t_key=y&keyword1=m1330

Mine is a *bit* better though.. the 'gap' at the top of the lcd is a lot less noticeable, but still there. The spacing on the hinges is a lot better - almost perfect. There are some 'creaks' depending on where/how you pick it up - imo the 'brushed aluminum' part wasn't a great idea. It looks awesome but is obviously too thin/flimsy. His SD card complaint really isn't valid imo - it sticks out so you can push it in to release it.

My biggest complaint is that there is a lot of freeplay when you push on the "XPS" logo to the left of the power button. Also, the tension on the lcd hinge isn't tight enough... and imo the LED backlit display isn't as big of a deal as everyone makes it to be. It doesn't seem any brighter than any of the older cc lcd's - although it is a bit thinner. I'm highly disappointed in the 'wasted space' on the keyboard - there is a 1/4" gap between the home, pg up, pg dn, and delete key. I wish the lcd glass went to the edge of the frame rather than having 3/4" of plastic surrounding the lcd. Overall I wish I'd gotten the latitude D630 14.1".. If I can get a higher res lcd then I most certainly will - 1280x800 isn't enough even at 13.3".

I had an M1210 and it seemed to be built much better than this. As a matter of fact, I would've bought another m1210 except I can't buy them through small/medium business anymore.

Also, for the business people - there is no docking station for the m1330.

It's a pita to find the actual dimensions on dell's site - but from what reviews are saying it looks like the D630 is <.5" larger and the same thickness. I'm going to order one and compare to the m1330. I'll keep everyone updated.

....also.. Dell now offers three battery sizes - 4 cell, 6 cell, and 9 cell. The 6 cell is a new addition - and fyi it does not stick out at all.

...and (finally).. does anyone know if there is a full-power 12.1" dell laptop in the works? I don't like the D430 since it uses the ULV cpu.. I do a little photo editing and lots of multi-tasking - I prefer a fairly beefy machine.

...ok ok last thing - something else that he didn't mention but is really annoying - these come with really small ac adapters, which is nice, but have a special octagon end on them so you can't plug them into the larger dell laptops. They thoughtfully designed the connector/laptop so that you can use a normal larger power supply with the m1330 (i.e. the round adapter plug will fit in the octagon female end) but it's VERY flimsy. I would've rather they stuck with the larger power supplies than leaving me with a shoddy connector.

I've pretty much decided 100% that I'm going to send this back and get a slightly larger D630 or slower D430. Too bad there isn't an M1210 any longer.

Update?

Did you end up buying a D630? I've had mine since July and I love it.

Yup - bought a spec'd out D630... T7800, 4gb memory, the new d/view docking station. So far it's awesome and built MUCH better than the m1330. It's a bit big for my needs but I really don't have a choice.. It's too bad dell doesn't sell a full powered 12" laptop..

My only complaint about the D630 is that the sound sucks. I'm guessing that since it's a 'business class' laptop that sound is unimportant, but it really is abysmal. Also, the LED screen on the M1330 looks a lot better but the D630 has a better/higher res.

I hear ya. It was hard going from my 700m to the D630 but the larger keyboard, brighter LCD, internal bluetooth, etc. helped ease that transition.

Probably due to the build quality. The Latitudes have a pretty serious endo-skeleton design. And although I cannot speak specifically to the quality of the Vostros, the difference between the inspirons and the latitudes is pretty striking.
